Should I Give It A Punt?

I'm wondering what the general feel is for Picard?

After being so utterly horrified by Discovery I've not even bothered with Picard as yet, though from screen shots I've seen the aesthetics aren't immediately off putting and I've read snippets of episodes and reviews leave me with mixed feelings. Whilst it is Sir Patrick and they do seem to be doing some interesting things with Seven, as well as some more development of the Romulans (about time), it could mean having to fork out for Amazon Prime (on top of Netflix and Disney+)--admittedly, I could go for a 30 day free trial and try the first episode, see what kind of taste it leaves in my mouth, then could binge from there or forget about it and get caught up with The Expanse.

Rambling, I know, but solo lockdown is slowly rotting my brain

Spoiler-free:

Writing: It's at times reminiscent of Discovery, at times much better. It's a strange mix.
There were better and worse episodes in the seasons, but the quality varies mostly scene from scene. Some very good scenes in there.

Acting: Generally good, especially from the veterans.

Looks: I thought it looked great. Minority Report-style controls on some vessels are a bit of a gratuitous "looks futuristic even though it's not really more practical!" choice, but that's about it.

Well the fact you are asking rather than just watching it is an indication that you probably will not like it.

At the end of the day if you want old school TOS then you will be disappointed.

Visually it looks great just like Discovery but that is where the similarities end.

Its not really like any Star Trek that has come before in structure or tone, if that is a problem for you then leave it be.

If you're gonna get mad because they use the Discovery Starfleet symbol and shuttles, give it a miss. If you need your Trek characters to be happy all the time and in permanent paradise, give it a miss.

If you want to see Captain Picard climb up from a dark hole and grow as a character along the way, give it a try.

I think It's better then Discovery.
The ships are a little bit disappointing
Just watched It, It only has ten episodes

This.

I thought Discovery’s first season was awful and liked this well enough. But it’s not TNG. Like Discovery, Picard defines its characters by how they’re broken — a trope I find tiring when applied so universally.

There are some beautiful moments but some very ugly ones as well.

From what I've heard of and seen of Discovery (just started watching that myself, on the third episode), Picard is different enough to give it a try on its own merits. I'd stick with it for the first three episodes before deciding if you want to continue. It's not TNG II as far as the premise and format are concerned, but if you're a TNG fan, there's plenty within to appreciate.

I *AM* a TNG fan, and I loved it. But not because it was TNG 2.0. Rather, because it was precisely what the TNG movies should have been -- a return to visit old characters out of their element in new adventures. If you like Star Trek, you will like (love) Picard!

I agree with this take. Picard is a mixed bag. There are a handful of genuinely great episodes (4, 6, and 8 in particular) a number of okay ones, and maybe two stinkers. It will be frustrating if you're expecting TNG 2.0, and for the most part the sections which don't involve Picard are very mediocre/Discoveryesque. But there's also lots of brilliant individual scenes, with much more attention paid to characterization than Discovery ever managed.

I liked some of the episodes but I think assessed as an arc - it was a shambles, lol.

Notwithstanding a few stupid moments that assaulted my senses, it's usually effortless watching it.
