Should hit $250M today

It's the second part of the last HP book, so it'll be big. The last HP movie.

This is from BOM:

2011:
2012 is a little far out, but expect Avengers, possibly Spider-man 4 (since they're supposedly filming them back-to-back), Madagascar 3, Beverly Hills Cop IV, Pirates 4, Ghostbuster 3, maybe the next Batman movie. These are not all confirmed, but most likely.

Spiderman 4 & 5. Another Batman movie. Cars 2. Ghostbusters 3. More Harry Potter. Pirates 4. Beverly Hills Cop 4. Another Kung Fu Panda movie. Madagascar 3. And even more Marvel Comics characters on screen. Is anyone in Hollywood making ORIGINAL stories with ORIGINAL characters any more? ;)

I've said this for a while now. Not that I'm complaining, especially regarding Star Trek, but I can't think of a major Hollywood blockbuster of the past five or six or even more years that wasn't based on an existing franchise.

Here's an interesting article about how Batman changed the movie industry 20 years ago, including the overuse of franchises:

Not sure why most people in here are thinking STXII is a lock to be even bigger than this one. I wouldn't say thats true at all. I certainly hope it is, but I'm not certain.

Nothing's "certain" except death and taxes. :p

...and a new 007 Bond someday

There's truth in all three of those statements. ST09 would've actually been a very good "one-and-off" movie. It was more of a fond homage to past TOS Trek and its characters as much as it was a good stand-alone movie in its own right. I think that's mainly the reason it earned a "pass" from a lot of critics. Especially from those who were otherwise quick to criticize the thin plot and weak villain.

Frankly, there has to be more pressure on Orci and Kurtzman now than there was in writing ST09. They've established the characters again, now how are they going to use them in this new universe they created? I'm betting they'll be a lot less sentiment and slack from fans and critics this time.

In a sense, there's more and less pressure on them for the next film.

More pressure for the reasons you indicated, but less in that they have a proven blueprint to work with in terms of characterization and tone of the movie.

WHERE ARE THE SPOILERS?

They just need to focus on making a good movie, and avoid pandering to the fans (us). Nothing wrong with making us happy within the confines of a good movie, like they did for STXI. They just need to keep doing what they're doing for STXII.

Aren't you the person who said Trek XI's box office take was disappointing?

Its not a lock, but the recent pattern with well received reboots is there are still people who hold off from seeing the movie, then they watch it on DVD and the next movie has an added audience....I would say the next movie should make over $450 million.
