I watched This side of Paradise last night and was a little taken aback by the irony of Sandoval saying, "you'll find no weaklings here." and McCoy commenting on how the spores give everyone 'perfect' health and then realizing that Elias sandoval actor Frank Overton didn't even live 3 months after filming the episode dying in April 1967.

So he was the porducers idea of a hardy, strong indidual with perfect health.

I think he needed the spores in real life more than the character did.
