Should Ent not have been called Ent?

Agenda

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I generally liked this show, especially seasons 3 and 4.

But I've always had this innate bias against it because it was called Enterprise, like it was trying to supplant the Enterprise of TOS and TNG.

You could argue that TNG tried doing the same by replacing TOS, but I always considered TOS to be "first" and nothing could change that, so I didn't care as much.

Maybe it's not logical, but that bias hasn't went away, even with time.

It should've been set on a Daedalus class ship, spending less time getting shot at and more time exploring strange new worlds and shit.

The title "ENTERPRISE" was perfect, and adding "Star Trek" in season 3 was IMO completely unnecessary.

I agree 100%. The ship should have been called anything but Enterprise. There was no mention of any ships named Enterprise between the Space Shuttle and the 1701 besides the ring ship.

Season 4 should have been what happened in Season 1.

Aside from the fact that I disliked most of the actors and I didn't like the design of the ship, I think it should have been called anything except Enterprise to at least keep the continuity straight. The first Enterprise was James Kirk's, not Scott Bakula's or Captain Archer's (although technically the TOS Enterprise was first captained by Christopher Pike)

I would have wanted them to call the show Enterprise (referring to the concept) but the ship something else (so as not to supplant TOS).

I was totally OK with the show being called "Enterprise."
I was totally OK with the show being called "Star Trek Enterprise."

Made no difference to me, since I liked the show right off and loved it up to, but not including, the bitter (and I do mean bitter) end.

Where in "continuity" does it state that the first Enterprise was Kirk/Pike? How would the aforementioned ringship fit into this? Was TMP erased from continuity when I wasn't looking? History is full of ships named "Enterprise" . The UFP's Starfleet was hardly the first to use that name.

IIRC, the Daedalus class was operated by UFPs Starfleet in the 2160s, so it seems unlikely that a United Earth vessel from the 2150s would be of that class.

The name "Enterprise" is closely associated with Star Trek. So I can't think of any reason not to call the show Enterprise.

I agree with this. It does annoy me a little that we were suddenly told that before Kirk's Enterprise there was another ship of the same name that was just as cool and important and looked kind of similar too, they just never got around to telling us. It doesn't really matter, but still...

I don't care enough about Kirk or the NCC-1701 to be offended that there was an Enterprise before them, but I do kind of wish ENT hadn't been called such, more because I'm tired of the idea that the only ships that matter in ST are named Enterprise.

And you're posting in ENT forum... WHY EXACTLY? :wtf:

We're often "suddenly" told things in serial fiction. "History" usually unfolds backwards in this format.

I always thought the show would've been better served called "Star Trek: Phoenix", a more direct nod to Zefram Cochrane's ship in First Contact. Or perhaps "Star Trek: Federation", and base it more on the founding of the Federation.

I preferred "Star Trek: Enterprise" over "Enterprise" because it told old and new fans exactly what type of show it was. Just calling it Enteprise reminded me of the car rental place. Who would want to watch a show set in a car rental place?

I also would have liked a different ship and show name, but I guess the creators were trying to make sure it was familiar to even the casual viewer who kinda knows about the starship Enterprise. Makes it less like VOY-- RR

If it was up to me, I would have called the series SPACE TREK and called the ship anything but Enterprise. Hell, I don't know why they couldn't have just called it the NX-01 and left it at that--I remember the old sci-fi serials had rocket ships simply with letters and numbers as the name...
