Should Endgame Have Been A 3-Part Episode?

Picard clearly doesn't want to be an Admiral. He wouldn't fit in with all the badmirals.

I don't remember what Admiral Janeway's rank was in Endgame, but in Nemesis, she was a Rear Admiral, which is one rank above Captain. In the Army, the equivalent would be a Brigadier(One Star)General, one rank above full Colonel. I don't think it strange at all that she got promoted once within a year or two after returning.

Yet in a profession where rank counts it does matter. My Dad was in the army for years. I remember living in camp and all my school friends knew what rank each Dad was.. I don't get why Picard would not want to rise in the ranks. As for Janeway she was never afraid to reach her potential.

^ Well, it depends what 'reaching your potential' means for a person. Everyone has a different set of talents and desires.

I have several friends who were very proud when they finally reached the highest (regular) rungs of academia, a full professorship. Now, I hear some of them complain with some regularity because they get so filled up in administrative and other 'professoral' duties that they barely have time left to do what they actually want to do, which is scientific research. That's why they entered the 'business' in the first place. And frankly, some of them excelled at research but are less efficient administrators, at least according to their own private admission.

So, is attaining that professorship 'reaching their potential', or should they have just stayed regular researchers?

Others are ready to move on after doing, say, 15 years of research and enjoy the challenges that come with such a job. To them, that professorship is reaching their potential (or at least, a new step in the process).

It very much depends on where you want to be.

Picard will stay a Captain as long as he can. One day, he'll attend a "Captain's Ball" and come to a new realization. He will say "This is young man's world. Yes, I am getting too old for this sort of thing." After that, he will take up an Ambassador's role before ultimately retiring to his Vineyard.

And then...

There is need for Admirals and the like, in the services. They're often regarded like stuffed shirts which isn't really fair.

Janeway didn't remain a science officer but carried that experience throughout her life. Going from Captain to Admiral would be her giving service. I was thinking of the Movie being considered part of the known timeline but I'm not sure if it is considered so. The movie Admiral Janeway, had reverence and Endgame's Admiral Janeway was amazing. She taught, she negotiated, cared, outranked, conceded, and eventually fell on her sword. Just seems Janeway was always going to be an Admiral.

I actually thought Jean-Luc would have made a good Admiral. His voice alone!
