"Shore Leave"'s Ruth questions

Okay, so what do people suppose is the story behind Kirk and Ruth?

Of all the people Kirk could've seen--it was her.

Was it just that particular flower?
Was she the love of his life?
Had the real Ruth been killed, so he was not only confused but surprised (or not only surprised but confused)?

Are there any theories?

And, on top of it all? She wasn't really that hot looking. I'm thinking she was a MILFish instructor from his academy days. Probably even the woman who took his virginity...now THAT would make a great movie (recasting the woman of course with..oh...Meg Ryan as the new 'older woman' Ruth)

Oh yeah...she was Kirk's *first*.

He was all "back in the Academy days" with Finnegan, so that's his frame of mind.

Then remember Kirk was about 33/34 at the time.
He says he hasn't seen her in 15 years (12? 18? check my memory...)
So that makes Kirk a pretty young fellow when he knew her,
maybe even a teenager.

And THEN he says she hasn't changed a bit--and she wasn't exactly in her 20s.
Which was great, considering Kirk's age at the time.

So in my mind, yeah...Kirk was conjuring up his first-timer with Ruth, and she might well have been a MILFish Academy instructor, or those ladies who like to snag young Academy plebes. Great stuff.

Off-topic, but just want to say that I absolutely adore Gerald Fried's classic Ruth theme. Great music!

I didn't realize that music was her theme.

Didn't they use it quite a bit after that?

It was truly nice.

Indeed. He must be looking at a different actress than the rest of us have been seeing for 40 years.

You know, back then, people kinda looked older than they were.

I mean, who would've thought Teri Garr (playing Roberta Lincoln in the episode "Assignment: Earth") was 19yo?!

So the actress playing Ruth could've been all of 27-32. Maybe she was the love Kirk left behind to be on the Enterprise?

According to The World of Star Trek, Ruth was Kirk's first serious romance, and a very intense one. Then Starfleet duty called him away for a long time, during which she married someone else.
