Shopping for used iPod; which generation?

I'm not sure what generation of iPod to get. I don't need the latest greatest voice-chat enabled fondue maker/GPS/rocket launcher version of iOS, but I at least need it to be able to run most mid-range games and apps. I don't mind loading screens, and I don't need that much memory (my current MP3 player only has about 230 songs on it).

So, would a 2nd generation be alright for me, or should I splurge a bit and get a 3rd generation? Either way, I'm going the used route.

I assume you're talking about an iPod Touch then? You should try checking the Apple Store website for refurbished kit as you can sometimes find either the current or last-gen stuff at a pretty good price. If you're more than a generation back I think you'll find fewer apps will run as the big sellers tend to stay current with iOS. In the iPhone for example anything older than a 3GS isn't going to run a lot of stuff.
