Shoot Em Up

I caught Shoot Em Up on Cinemax HD yesterday. While, its not a great movie...it was a lot of fun. However it really was missing something and that something to me was style. I think if they went for a kind of Sin City look, the kind used for the end credits, I think the movie may have done better.

I enjoyed it. Spiritual successor to Crank while avoiding the pitfalls of Smokin' Aces. You're right, it could have had more of its own style - but I wasn't expecting too much so was pleasantly surprised.

Oh, I just remember... I think I watched this movie shortly after I saw Children of Men. I would have never watched it if it hadn't of been for Clive Owen.

What was your problem with Smokin' Aces?

Honestly, I found all three of those films to be about the same. Fun, filled with action, and ultimately forgettable. Perfect rentals.

This movie is great. There's nothing serious about it, and the chemistry between the characters is pretty good. No deception there !

Smokin' Aces was boring and tried way too hard to be a lot cooler than it was. Not even Alicia Keys, the smokin' babe she is, could save it. Shoot 'Em Up however was the real deal, pure awesome! I thought it was perfect just the way it was.

You know what I hate?

Not this movie. It's awesome.

 :techman:

It had some great lines:

"I'm hoping you're not just a pussy with a gun in your hand?"
"Oh no sir. No, I am not. I am a tough guy with a pussy in my hand."

"I'm a British nanny, and I'm dangerous."

[to room full of bad guys before they ambush the hero]
"Does anyone know what a Jimmy Cagney love scene is? It's when Cagney lets the good guy live... and if that happens in this show, I will do a lot more than ask for my money back."

[after the aforementioned room full of bad guys are almost all killed and the hero escapes]
"My god! Do we really suck or this guy really that good?"

It's hard to say exactly why, but I consider it one of the worst films I've seen in the past few years. I think it's just devoid of fun and it really shouldn't be.

Alicia Keys is the one bright spot. The rest is a boring, try-hard mess.

Shoot 'Em Up. Fucking brilliant. :)

I didn't know what to expect. I bought the ticket, figuring it would be a fun little crime flick with Clive Owen and some guns.

What I was not expecting was a hyper-violent, live-action Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd cartoon. Once my brain accepted that, and it was probably during the delivery scene when Mr. Smith cuts the umbilical cord with a bullet, it was a non-stop laugh riot.

I don't think I even laughed that hard at Hot Fuzz.

I don't expect a lot of people to "get" Shoot 'Em Up. The people I know who do "get" the film love it. :)

That's what happened to me. A fantastic movie. Besides, death by carrot? How can you not love that! :D

"F*** me sideways". -Paul Giamatti's character's incredulous response to some some fantastic shooting by Clive (whats his name's) character.

Yeah, I use that sometimes. I laughed my ass off during the sex scene gun battle. Hilarious! I love it when a movie understands that it shouldn't be taken seriously. I liked this one almost as much as Crank.

I absolutely loved Shoot 'Em Up. It was the most fun I had at the theater in a long time. The movie understand how ridiculous and over the top it is, and makes absolutely no apologies. In fact, it relishes it. It's just pure fun from start to finish. Almost everything is done with a wink and a nudge and the people that are in on the joke have a blast watching it.

Awesome movie, soooo much fun. :D The cast just totally kicks ass (pun intended) in this movie. I picked this up on Blu-ray a while back and I really need to watch it again.

It's weird. A reviewer on a podcast (his last episode no less), hated the film enormously. While I don't think the film is necessarily bad, the action sequences were just so dry I didn't really care.

Reviewers like to pull out the "it's like a video game" card... well, if games played like Shoot Em Up, I'd burn my PS3 and 360 and stick to playing Wii Sports for the rest of my life.
