Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this boring

RAMA

Admiral
Admiral
old Hollywood?

Synopsis: By 2031, the Earth has exhausted its supply of fossil fuels. With the world on the verge of collapse, nations from around the globe form a coalition called AREN; the ‘Manhattan Project’ of clean self-replenishing energy. When an experiment goes wrong that threatens the world’s existence, David Canterra and a team of elite soldiers are sent on a mission to stop the anomaly. What they find is a mind-bending alternate dimension, and their only way home is through the fabric of time.

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

I've seen that one a few times before.

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

Sounds a bit like Stargate meets Primeval.

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

Sounds like Sliders meets Boring.

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

So the message here is "renewable energy will destroy the planet"? Great message. Anyway, why are these jokers buggering about with the fabric of space-time when they should be working on refining nuclear fusion reactors?

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

^^^ I think the message is "stupid fuckwits thinking they're smarter than they really are destroy the planet in pursuit of renewable energy". A far more believable and compelling concept.

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

^Oh so it's really an anti-intellectual film about how 'dem fancy smart folk ain't as clever as us normal people. Good to know.

But compelling? Believable? You really think so? Sounds like the premise of a Roland Emmerich disaster flick to me.

I mean come on, of all the reasons a writer could choose to have his contrived scientific apocalypse, why pick on renewable energy? I mean yes, it's terribly ironic that the quest to save humanity ends up threatening it's very existence, but I wouldn't exactly call it compelling.

As as for believable, as I said, why bugger about with the some hair brained new method of energy production that involves buggering about fabric of the universe, when there's already a much more convenient form of renewable energy that just needs more refinement. A lot more, granted, but at least we know it works.

Anyway, what is this cultural obsession of people in lab coats destroying the planet through hubris? To date, such people have collectively done far more to improve the quality of life and advance humanity than almost any other group in history. The LHG didn't suck the planet into a singularity, The Manhattan Project didn't result in global thermonuclear war and the one or two times we even came close was the work of politicians and generals, not scientists.

Dude - chill. It was a joke. I just didn't think I needed the emoticons to demonstrate that, as I thought my tongue-in-cheek sarcasm was pretty thick. Of course I think this sounds like a horribly stupid and formulaic plot.

Guess I'm too subtle for my own good sometimes.

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

By far the best plot I've heard in quite a while. It's only a premise. We have no idea what the story is yet. It makes Prometheus look like swiss cheese already. I walked out on that dross. I want my eight dollars back too.

Oh I got your sarcasm...though apparently you missed mine. :p

AH! My bad. Your subtlety is considerably far more honed than mine. :D

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

Meh, this does nothing for me. Sounds kinda same old same old to me.

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

It looks like it could either be boring or it could be trippy as hell. It includes so many cliched ideas that they clash in bizarre ways, but that could work. Or it could just be "The Core." No matter what, it's not a great concept, but it really depends on execution.

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

ELECTRICAL SUPERSTORMS!!!

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

an "anomaly" that threatens the fabric of space and time is not very original at all, whatever they say caused it

That same group of people brought us Zyklon B, Agent Orange, PCBs, Thalidomide, BGH in our milk supply, and GMO foods of dubious safety. Their engineering counterparts brought us great works of machinery and architecture and ever increasingly sophisticated mechanisms.

Those same engineers have also killed the jobs of multiple millions of people, stealing their livlihood and allowing those with the money to control the machines to profit from their misery.

"Fire well used warms, ill-used burns" as the saying goes. Science and technology are at best neutral, capable of being used for good OR ill, and we should carefully regulate both.

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

^Don't blame the creator for how a creation is used.

Re: Shit...now THIS is a science fiction MOVIE premise...hear this bor

It reminds me of The Core.
Exactly. The idea was far from original, and I can just about tell you the makeup of the 'crew', and who'll survive to the end. This is real dream factory fodder.

Someone further up mentioned why Hollywood thinks the guys in white coats would do it. Funny answer: because the guys in white coats really want to see what happens. Slightly more serious answer - the guys in white coats have some sense of consequence and mostly wouldn't do it. But there are always one or two who are a bit sociopathic, and they have to be watched. Also, Hollywood loves playing on the Frankenstein meme.

Hmm, I wonder what would make it more interesting?

I know... DINOSAURS!! Dinos make everything interesting!

No, that really would be like Primeval.

Bad people coming through? Stargate, any version.

Hmmmmmmmmm. Maybe if... maybe if the other reality was leaking into ours and changing things here and now. That might be interesting.

Like Avatar, no matter how good it looks, it sounds too much like stories we've seen a dozen times before.
