Shat Happens

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
1) in the movie Generations:

Data: "Oh, shit."

2) in the movie Into Darkness:

Adm. Robocop: "Well shit. You talked to him."

Which one do you prefer?

Marcus for sure. His "utterance" is at least natural and believable, while Data's is just a cheap laugh milked from the emotion chip contrivance.

This is perhaps the shittiest thread title I've seen. And perhaps one of the most offensive, since it seems to exist only for shock value.

I am shocked that you left out Kirk saying bullshit to Spock in Star Trek 11.

Kirk also said, "dipshit," as he repeated Gillian Taylor's use of it. It seems "shit" is the only obscenity that Paramount's comfortable letting the crew use. I guess because it's so tame, but there are a lot of tame "curses" ... many others. Let's see the crew use some variety. Mix it up, a little. In answer to the original question, Kirk's saying "shit" I guess is the most interesting, as he's representing ALL of Mankind, through his adventures in these stories ...

And you didn't include the time Picard said merde in an early episode.

And it's a slow Wednesday? Wednesday is hump day, bub. You should have made this about humping.

I liked them both.

Data's was a funny moment in a lackluster film.

That's interesting. Evidently they needed to keep their movies and shows PG or G-rated.

Now I imagine what if a fake expletive had been invented for the Star Trek characters to use when needed.

It's been done before (and even in kids's shows):
Star Wars: Poodoo
Transformers: Slag (link)
Buzz Lightyear: Craters

In all these cases the meaning is obvious. There must be more.

edit: Klingons use P'tagh , don't they? what does that mean? certainly nothing good.

Data over Marcus. Marcus' line was very believable, but Data's line was a classic "we're no longer beholden to TV censors" joke. Back in the 80s, censorship was a hot topic. Interviews with writers of TV and comic books seemed to say over and over again, "Sometimes you just want your hero to say, 'oh shit.' "

Honorable mention goes to STID when Scotty was about to say,"shit," and the scene cut to the shhh of a door opening.

Do you mean "p'tak"? I think it means something like "coward," although I could have misunderstood.

As for "merde"... either their censors didn't understand it, or they assumed there were no French-speaking people watching TNG.

"P'tak" is an expletive that can have different meaning in different context...in the context of this thread, it could mean:

"shithead"

:)

You've obviously never seen Farscape. They had a lot of made-up cuss words and phrases. It was great fun to listen to.
