Her Depression-era influence extended well into my childhood in the '70s as I watched her old movies on TV with my siblings. She was also excellent as a young adult in one of my all-time favorite movies, Fort Apache. She stayed out of the public eye for so long I wasn't really sure how old she was, I was a bit surprised she was "only" 85, but that's what happens when you start so early, I guess. Thanks for the memories and RIP.

She was an icon of a Hollywood that is long since gone. I tried to think of a child celebrity of similar levels of fame today and sadly the only name I could think of was Honey Boo Boo. I'm sure there must be somebody better.

I think she's in her late 30s. I was thinking more of one that was a child right now.

I think Shirley Temple is like John Wayne, they were icons of a type that is not easy to find equivalents. You can find successful young actresses, say like Dakota Fanning, but probably not in that same "America's Sweetheart" way. The Olsen Twins made $300 million dollars but I don't know if they're universally loved.
