Ships of the Star Fleet: Vol. 1 vs. Vol. 1 Revised

Nearly two decades ago I encountered a copy of Ships of the Star Fleet and have finally decided to break down and buy a copy. I was curious though what the differences where between the orginal and revised editions?

I only have the original, but I think "Revised" just added some perspective views of certain ships. Beyond that, I'm not sure.

It's been a looong time... I had the original, a friend wanted it badly, so when the "revised" version came out, I let him have it (cheap) and bought the new one.

As memory serves, nothing was really lost. I think that the main thing was the addition of some color graphics. There may have been some updated tabular data someplace, but I never caught it. Mainly... think "color" and that pretty much covers it. If memory serves...

All things considered, all I can say for certain is that, at the time, I saw no reason to keep the original copy, and if there are significant changes or removals, I usually keep the old alongside the new (as I did with my spiral-bound and square-bound copies of the "USS Enterprise Officer's Manual" and so forth).

Yeah, nothing was lost. In addition to the perspective drawings and color foldouts, there were also additional ship drawings, but no new classes. Just design variations within a class. But they were pretty cool and illustrated how different ships within the same class might differ in details somewhat.

The same thing happened in "Starfleet Prototype", IIRC - which changed the name and design of 3 ships. The reason why escapes me. I think there was an issue with the names and who initially drew them. Can't remember now.

I remember reading once that the biggest changes were the removal of any direct references the events of the movies. Though who knows how accurate that source was.

IIRC, SF Prototypes "borrowed" other peoples' designs without permission.

Is it in print again? Or are we talkin' ebay. I'd love a new copy since the pages are falling out of my original.

Would have to be Ebay or a specialty store that still has copies. I post at the FRS site everyday almost, and if it were back in print I'm sure it would've been mentioned long ago.

Yeah, I checked Amazon, and they have only used copies, except for one
"new" listed at $75!

Schmidt drew up a few classes based on Guenther and Sofia's designs. He cited them, but there was a conflict so he ditched them in later versions. It's all been resolved now, though.

Bit me in the ass when I kitbashed the Venture, which I based partially off the Menahgha. I saw it in Prototypes, which had NO copyrights or references at all in the book. I wanted to note some kind of credit, but all I could say was "inpsired by a design in SF prototypes." (I was unaware of where it came from at the time). Then when I did up a data sheet and sold it online. Mike Morisette threated to sick his lawyers on me. THEN I knew where it came from! and could credit it properly on the datasheets.
