Ships from Star Trek Online

Hellsgate, thanks for the links...some interesting stuff there. Much better than the steaming excrement produced for the online game.

I am generally disappointed with the "stylized look" that they finally decided on for Star Trek: Online and I am generally disappointed with the look and design of the starships. The Tahoe-class and the Sacagewea-class looked pretty cool when the Ryan Dening-created concept art was released, but on the whole I am not impressed. Perpetual hired Andrew Probert and John Eaves and so perhaps maybe my expectations were too high?

I am just hoping that they will reveal the really cool stuff closer to the release of the game, but time will tell.

I don't know, the sketches from Probert and Eaves looked much better than what we've been seeing from the game - to me at least.

Please remember that if someone is hired to do a job, it doesn't necessarily mean they'll be allowed to do it. However, if they are able to do their job, it doesn't necessarily mean their work will be used.

Andrew-

I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in my dislike of the new designs. So far whenever I've mentioned to friends it I've been the only person who hated them.

I just think it's a huge step back. They look much less advanced than previous ships by ditching the cleaner/sleeker look and just doesn't click with me at all.

There were a few sketched I liked (Maybe from Eaves?) but some designs just made very little sense - such as the 'donuts'. Why are there holes in the hull? Surely thats just wasted space.

Well said, jamestyler. I'm surprised your friends like them. Most of my friends aren't quite the Trekkie I am, but I am eager to show them to one or two who are video game enthusiasts to get their reactions.

I suppose one could rationalize the 'doughnuts' as being concessions to the ship's mass or something like that. That particular item is not really on my list of complaints, though.

Ya, what's sad is that I could desing better ships then this!

Andrew-

That's not very reassuring. :(

Ah, the Starship Sample. A good ship. :p

I don't so much mind the bottom one, but it looks like a Miranda crossbred with a Centaur.

Seriously, I do hate that we have straight-up Mirandas and other ships here. The variation/customization helps, but it's still obviously a Miranda. And with the potential for customization comes the apparent combination of parts that don't look very good put together IMO, as some of those illustrate.

In the article Craig stresses the customization of the look of the ships and that you can achieve looks from TOS to TNG in style. This is very promising! From his description I am guessing it works in a "chassis" style. you'll have Miranda chassis's, Constitution chassis's, Galaxy chassis's, etc. You'll choose a chassis, then customize the appearance of individual parts. It's gonna be like playing with a 3-d version Vance's schematics!
OK, here's my point of view being an mmo player. From experience I am guessing this will become a way to tell the older players from the younger. If its like the players in world of warcraft, the little kiddies will be turning out alot of U.S.S. Fanboy designs while the more serious players will attempt a more balanced look.
It will be interesting how much latitude they give in naming your ship. Will each name be unique for the server like a character name is? Or will names be non-unique? Might start thinking of ship and character names now so you can reserve them as soon as you get in game!

That seems about right, sojourner. And I suppose it is something of a dramatic conceit that you can pick from TOS era and TNG era ships... but it still irks me a little.

I'm not laughing at you wanting to kill yourself, JNG, but I am laughing that that was your reaction to that question. :rommie:

If you mean fellow players getting together to crew a ship, that would be like a "raid group" or "guild" in wow. If you mean npc crewmembers, then that would be more like a hunter's pet in wow.

Clans are those guys that invaded the Innersphere in Battletech.
