Well... there is one thing to consider... starfleet has thoses borg/romulan torpedos to examine.... right before spock goes to warp at the end of the movie... nero fires thoses torpedos... all there going to do is continue on there course till they run out of fuel... star fleet can pick them up any time and examine their tech...
