Sherlock Special Setting (spoilers)

Steven Moffat has told Entertainment Weekly that the upcoming Sherlock special will have a different setting.

“The special is it’s own thing,” Moffat told EW before attending a panel at the South by Southwest conference on Monday. “We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”
Thoughts, concerns, accusations that Moffat has really lost his marbles this time?

Possibly some holiday special, Halloween, or a anniversay of maybe a original story or something along those lines, or maybe the cast were all just free at one point for just enough for a special until we get season 4.

Could be anything.

I think Sherlock proved that modern London is just as dark, sexy and mysterious as Victorian London

That said, I'd be quite happy to see Thundersnatch and Freeman running around the murky, misty streets of Victorian London (especially if it's league of gentleman style Victorian London)

They were filming in Bath last month, even had an old Victorian post box as part of the dressing.

No question Cumberbatch and Freeman will knock it out of the park, and bonus points to the former for deliberately emulating Jeremy Brett's wardrobe.

Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law... ball's in your court. (To mix sports metaphors.)

I'd been expecting the Christmas special to be an Elseworlds Sherlock from the moment the first Victorian garb pictures surfaced. It didn't make any sense to me for Moffat and Gatiss to pick up on the cliffhanger for series 3 in the Christmas special. A non-continuity special -- a period Sherlock Holmes story with the Sherlock cast -- seemed to me to be an easy way of not dealing with the end of the third series.

Hopefully it will be fun.

I imagine that it'll be Holmes and Watson instead of Sherlock and John - a bit Stiff Upper Lip, and possibly with reference to Holmes' cocaine habit. Looking forward to it.
