SHERLOCK HOLMES trailer now online!

^There were plenty of dying-and-resurrected god figures in mythology before Jesus came along. Osiris, Horus, Orpheus, Adonis, Tammuz, etc. It's an archetype that's been around for as long as humans have personified nature, a symbol of the cycle of the seasons.

As I said above, I suspect that this version of Holmes is being heavily influenced by Dr. Gregory House (of TV's House) who himself is heavily inspired by Holmes.

Those making this movie are probably banking on that connection and thus are circling the connections because some audience goers will expect certain similarities in the characters.

I don't think there's any way in hell the filmmakers even considered House in any decision made during this production. I also don't think many audience members are going to expect any similarities at all, as the majority of House's viewers probably aren't even aware there's a connection.

I think your House fandom may know no bounds. ;)

The irony is that Doyle intended to kill off Holmes permanently, but he wrote the story in such a way that made it easy to resurrect him, since the narrator, Watson, didn't actually see Holmes' death, merely inferred it.

Well, in Doyle's defense, this was before the establishment of the comic book rule that no one is dead until you see their body (and sometimes even then...).

Trope originator, maybe? Or was that Jesus?

No. With Jesus, everyone saw the body. He just got better.

I was looking forward to this movie when it was first announced. Looks fun. I didn't know Rachel McAdams was in it. If I wasn't already interested in it, I am now! :techman:

Eh. Doesn't really do much for me, as a fan of the Jeremy Brett series and the original novels. Yes, Holmes was more active than many adaptations make him out to be, but jumping-out-of-a-window-into-the-Thames active? Not really...
He was practising for Reichenbach Falls. ;)

Ah, super saiyan.

Looks pretty damn exciting. This might be just the thing to pull Guy Ritchie out of the creative hole. .

That should not be a problem, now they are separated.;)

Ouch.

I think Robert Downey Jr. looks like an interesting Holmes. I don't think he looks quite spacey enough. I always picture him as someone that doesn't live in our reality. He observes but he doesn't interact and seems very intellectually self-involved.

almost sounds like he has Asperger's Syndrome...

Thought I would never say this but I am going to see Sherlock Holmes at the cinema. looks wonderful fun.

It it still "usual" for Watson to be portrayed as incompetent? I thought the Jeremy Brett series had pretty much put that convention to rest.
Not that I know of. Certainly in the popular consciousness he's still thought of as a comic relief fool.

I'm not talking about popular perception, I'm talking about how Watson's actually been played in Sherlock Holmes productions over the past couple of decades. Has the bumbling Watson made a comeback in actual film appearances in the past decade or two?
