Sherlock - BBC ONE & HD - Sunday 25th

Didn't see it this week - was out seeing Shrek 4, so had to record it.

Or tried to. Unfortunately, the channel select on the program menu for a timed recording doesn't include the "L1" for the AV line that comes out of the sky box- so I've missed Sherlock and recorded 90 minutes of sparkly static-filled blackness.

Whoop de fucking do.

No, I don't do iPlayer - I like watching stuff on the big TV not a lappie screen.

At least I got back from the cinema in time for Top Gear

Does your laptop not have S-video or HDMI output on it? You could watch full screen on your TV through that... or if you have a Wii or PS3 use iPlayer on them.

^Yeah, that annoyed me, why the hell wasn't she trying to tip the chair over?

Anyway, not as much fun as last week's but still enjoyable. Hopefully they can kick it back up a notch next week.

Just watched the first episode and enjoyed it hugely. I don't think I've ever seen the actor playing Holmes in anything before, but damn he's good. I loved the hostility between him and some of the experts at the crime scene.

Not quite sure I'm convinced by his villainous brother - I guess the character just needs more screentime to make more of an impression.

This was quite enjoyable, but it felt like it could have been any random detective and sidekick. I was really struggling to hear anything of Conan Doyle's voice. Callous and monomaniac though he was, I don't recall Holmes being that rude to Watson.

Or was that just me?

Yep, enjoyed that quite a bit. I'm not really a Holmes expert, but there were just enough references there for even a casual fan lik eme to pick up. And yes, the Mycroft gag got me. But then I'm the sort who tries not to figure out the plot ahead of time (nomally useless in a Moffat story anyway) unless its just so painfully obvious that it takes me out of the story.
And one of the good things about being an American viewer. We rarely have pre-conceived notions about actors.

And yes, didn't enjoy the second one quite as much as the first. I dunno. Tracking down international relic smugglers just doesn't seem terribly epic.

Looking forward to the final episode.

I'll be getting the DVD when it comes out at the end of the month anyway.
Is there a Blu-ray release on the roster also? The PQ is excellent on BBC HD, but only Pro-logic sound - unlike the antecedent season of Doctor Who, which was broadcast with DD 5.1. Perhaps this is an incentive to actually purchase the Blu! I would be happy with a home burnt BD, but a DTS HD soundtrack might just tempt me.

On Blu-ray as well:

ETA: couldn't find any info on the soundtrack -- sorry.

Steven Moffat just tweeted that he's in LA promoting the upcoming US broadcasts of Sherlock, so I assume the show will be on some time soon.

Mycroft isn't really villainous, at least not in the Conan Doyle works. He's basically just Sherlock's stodgier older brother—equally brilliant (if not more), he just hates getting his hands dirty and kind of looks down on Sherlock's bounding about solving mysteries. In the books, too, he works for the government, in some vague but apparently indispensable position.

Anyway, I just caught up on the second episode. Quite entertaining, but agreed with those who say it wasn't quite as good as the first one. Still, I'm definitely sold on it, and I hope the BBC decides to make a second series.

He's the guy Sherlock goes to for help when he's stumped by something. But Mycroft is antisocial; he spends most of his time at an exclusive club for misanthropes where nobody ever talks to each other-- called, of all things, the Diogenes Club. :rommie:

Today's episode was pretty damn good. Back up to the standard of the first one I thought.

Great references to the books (the Bruce-Partington plans, the five pips, and so forth), plus a really brilliant idea in terms of pacing to give Holmes so many cases to solve (the Vermeer was the best one I thought, though I felt pretty chuffed with myself to have solved the TV makeover murder as soon as they showed the needlemarks on her forehead).

Loved the fake-out with Watson towards the end (almost fell for it for a second or two before realising no-one can fake being as dense as he is!) but the Moriarty stuff minutes after was even better.

Loved the cliffhanger too, which even had Riechenbach overtones, what with potentially being a mutual end, at the side of water. :D

The love the writers have for the Conan-Doyle books really shines through. If they can maintain the quality of the first and third episodes (we'll forget about the second) in the full series, I will be delighted to have something worth watching again!

IT WAS FANTASTIC!!!

My brain totally melted with this absolutely brilliant episode, which I think is even better than the first episode. I love all the references to the books, best of all, they don't feel out of place in 2010 setting.

"hang on, you read his blog?" :guffaw: :guffaw:

indeed, I was thinking "oh, NO" at that moment, mostly because Moffat tweeted "Sherlock will never be the same" on Sunday afternoon.

Loved the cliffhanger too,
I was swearing at the screen when the credit started to roll. it's going to be a LONG LONG wait.

the second episode now feel very out of place between 1 and 3, the writing and direction are on a different level for 1 and 3.

BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson is meeting up with Moffat and Gatiss on Wednesday. It's almost certain now Sherlock will return for a second series, BBC would be stupid to not to, with this rating, AI, good reviews and buzz (fashion shows are opening with large caper and extra long coats a la Sherlock atm). I hope it won't be a long wait.
