Shepherd has old Rainbow Sun Franks memorize the symbols for the lit up DHD showing where the Wraith take Teyla and the Terminator. He wants Rodney to figure out where they went and Rodney says there are hundreds of possible combinations and Shep says,"720." Rodney is surprised that Shep knows the number. The number is arrived at by taking a 6!(6 factoral).

So there are six unique symbols and the seventh is thrown out because it is the origin point. So if you had one number to guess with one known symbol you would have a 1/1 chance of getting it. So using numbers as the symbol 1-6 with no repeats your chances keep getting worse as you add another symbol to be guessed.
1.(1)=1 possibility
2.(1,2) or (2,1)=2 possibilities
3.(1,2,3) or (1,3,2) or (2,1,3) or (2,3,1)... if you write it out long hand all the way you get 6 possibilities
4.There are 24 now
5. 120
6. 720
You get the number by multiplying 6x5x4x3x2x1=720.
Because the six symbols are known you don't have to have a 1 in 38 guess for each chevron, but only the arrangement of the six symbols, that is, their order.
