Shatnertage's Mostly-1st-Time Watch Thread

I'd seen Leeta before (I know I've seen some scattered later episodes...I actually thought she was in it from the start). I still don't know exactly what to think.

I'm so tired right now, I have but one thought:

"Hammock time!"

Other than that, watching O'Brien and Bashir get drunk together is a great moment. The only thing that could have made it better was if they had gotten the rights to sing Rocket Man.

^ And to think that I shied away from making an MC Hammer reference in my original post. That's awesomeness.

Well, apparently there's a sizable group out there who don't like her. I'll admit that there are things about her that rub me the wrong way, but on the whole I like her.

I don't like Leeta at all; she's annoying and I see absolutely zero depth to the character except maybe for the one time she...

...stands up to Quark.

Granted, Leeta doesn't have much characterization but she does have more than just standing up to Quark (probably the one thing I like about Bar Association).

For instance, she's also brave enough to take part in the resistance during the Dominion Occupation at the start of Season Six and it's clear that she wants to be a good mother-figure for Nog in It's Only a Paper Moon.

I'm back after taking care of some...

"Family Business"

What's the deal with Star Trek and Hungarian food? In an episode of Voyager Janeway made chicken paprikash, and Sisko does it here. Nice schpetzle, too.

Read on MA that the writers thought this was a "serious" Ferengi episode, but it's hard to take it seriously--or even watch it--when they go for the gross out humor at every opportunity: eating worms, tooth sharpening, ear cleaning. Yeah, they wrote a regular Brothers Karamazov there. And my wife pointed out the hobbit-hole look right away.

And as much of a Jeffery Combs fan as I am, he didn't really get to do a lot with Brunt. To say nothing of Andrea Martin as Ishka--she's way better than what she did here.

I was looking forward to seeing the introduction of Kasidy Yates since I'm a fan of Penny Johnson's work on The Larry Sanders Show. I was a little disappointed, particularly with the hair styling they gave her. It's like the ultimate hair helmet or something. I've got to give them credit--they've got a real talent for making attractive actresses look really strange, to the extent that I was wondering if Johnson's character was supposed to be human or some kind of alien.

Futhermore, Rom moaning "Mooooogie" is definitely an acquired taste.

That's about all I've got to say about that one. There are definitely some interesting Ferengi stories to be told, but it would help if they cut the 5th-grade gross-out stuff. I'd say "Profit and Loss" is a far better example of a serious Ferengi story than this one.

One little detail that was strange, but fun: when Sisko's talking to Yates in the cargo bay, there's a stack of boxes labeled "Kasidy Yates." I guess she's really special, because we never saw a cargo bay full of stuff labeled "Jean-Luc Picard" on TNG.

Ah, Family Business - an attempt to do a serious Ferengi episode that backfires horrendously.

Why does it backfire? Because the message is clearly meant to be "Ishka = good, Quark = bad." However, Quark does have legitimate grievances against his mother. For lack of a better way to say it - she treats him like crap! Her entire attitude seems to be "I'm going to strike a blow for Ferengi females everywhere, and if it means that Quark has to lose everything he holds dear, then by God I'm going to see to it that he makes that sacrifice!"

If they wanted me to like this character, they could have made her more sympathetic. Striving equality is a good thing, but treating your own child like a doormat isn't. Seriously, it's almost as if his feelings and wishes don't even cross her mind.

And don't even get me started on how she CLEARLY favors Rom over Quark.

I have a real problem when parents (in real life) use their children in such a way. As a result, Ishka is easily one of my least favorite characters on the show.

Of course, Picard wasn't the captain of a merchant ship hauling cargo around, either. ;)

Leeta grew on me. And I, too, met and had dinner with her (a large table at a con). She's incredibly gracious. That's prob. why I like Leeta a lot more nowadays. ;)

Well, I'm back with...

"Shakaar"

There were a few neat things--and some awesome things--about this episode, but the plot wasn't exactly the best one. It reminded me a great deal of that first season episode where Kira tries to persuade the old guy to leave the moon.

But it has what might be the best confrontation scene between two non-regulars ever, a showdown between (the guy who plays) Deputy Rawls and Kai Winn. Awesome, awesome, awesome. And now I get a joke that TheGodBen made a few months ago. Even better.

His name (Lenaris Holem) is a little unfortunate because it kind of sounds like "asshole" if you say it quickly.

The rest of the episode? I really don't have any strong feelings one way or the other. The music when the militia folks were moving into the canyon was pretty good. And I liked the B-story with O'Brien getting in the zone. Clever ending, too.

I have now peered into several...

"Facets"

On the face of it (ha ha) this should have been a horrible show. The basic idea is a pretty daft one that just doesn't make a lot of sense if you think about it for more than a second. Even the big reveal that Curzon loved--and still loves--Jadzia is both creepy and nonsensical, since Jadzia now has all of Curzon's memories and should already know exactly why he washed her out of the program in the first place.

But there's some good acting, so I liked this one.

First of all, I want to reserve my tickets to a Star Trek convention in 30 years just to see Nana Visitor, because she makes a really cute little old lady. I really expected her to roll out a cart with milk and cookies on it. In a good way.

I thought the point of the episode was going to be that the nutty one actually took over Sisko, but it didn't work out that way. Although we got to see Avery Brooks do crazy, which is always fun.

Loved Curzon ordering tranya. I figured that maybe after Kirk and Balock made friends, tranya circulated back to the Federation and became the hip thing to drink around the time that Curzon was young. So ordering it made a lot of sense. But man, he liked to drink, didn't he?

Once again, I'm a little underwhelmed by this one. All the little pieces fit together well, but the big picture is still a little fuzzy.
