Keiko as a teacher irritates me, too. And MORE SO even later. I'm going to stop myself from delivering a long (and pot roasty) rant about it, though. I will tell you this: At the end of the first season, Keiko's actions at the school provide an excuse for one of my favorite recurring characters to show up on the station and make herself known. And that's all I'm sayin' for now.

It's just the whole idea that she's qualified to be a teacher just because she needs something to do that bugs me. If she wanted to be a warp engineer, could she just learn on the job, too?
And is K-12 education no longer mandatory in the Federation? Jake made reference to studying on his computer, so I guess home-schooling is the norm?
One other thing that made me laugh. When Sisko gave his impassioned speech about how we shouldn't mistrust Odo just because he looks different, I shouted, "MESSAGE!" I find that kind of preachiness really unnecessary, because Trek fans aren't known for burning crosses, setting off car bombs, or attacking random passers-by based on their race. So it's kind of preaching to the choir.
The thing I liked best about this episode was the interplay between Quark and Odo. Quark's a good friend to have as an enemy, if that makes sense.

Took me a while to get used to Brooks' cadences, but over time found enjoyed listening to him like music. I think DS9 had a really interesting orchestra of voices, probably the best: Brooks' sonorous mellifluousness, Odo's baritone staccato; Kira's soaring soprano (aka whine); Quark's barking tenor (would make a great Loge/Mime in The Ring). Yeah, I love listening to his voice. It just kind of breaks the illusion that I'm watching people just having an ordinary day on a space station. I imagine he does pretty well with voiceover work.
The lower decks episode would be some random Lt going "O crap, why does the captain always speak like its the end of the world?"
Of course, they do lampshade it (Brooks acting chops) a bit in a future episode that is a ton of fun.

Since I don't have the next disc from Netflix yet, I'm going to talk about something else that bugged me from what I've seen so far: the monochromatic clothes for civilians.
Maybe it's just personal taste, but I think same-color tops and bottoms don't look good on anyone--naturally if it's a couture garment that's an exception, but as a general rule wearing a matching purple sweatshirt and sweatpants will make me think: Barney. I barely got out of the VOY forum for taking the Ivory Tux in vain, so I won't mention that here.
But suffice it to say that in general I just don't go for wearing monochromatic outfits.
The folks on Voyager got some pretty hideous outfits on its civilians. Exhibit A is whatever they dressed Icheb in. For a smart guy they had him wearing some pretty ugly stuff. But what I've seen so far on DS9 is even worse. Maybe it's because there are more non-Starfleeters around, but it seems like everyone's wearing a monochromatic jumpsuit. Station security. Poor Jake. Even Nog.
Ironically, even though the duty uniform was a blue jumpsuit, the costuming on Enterprise is my favorite of any series (with an exception for the William Ware Theiss creations in TOS).
This isn't the kind of thing that's going to ruin the show for me, and it's not going to make me going into a foaming rant against "The Powers That Be," but it's just a little thing that annoys me. It makes everyone look too much like they're showing up to work on a railroad or something.
Hopefully Garak will do something to halt this disturbing fashion trend sometime soon.

"Babel"
This one is a definite thumbs-in-the-middle for me. I really like that it's rooted in an actual science concept (aphasia), and there's a few great elements, including the Odo/Quark dynamic. As a story, though, it was a bit of a let-down.
I really like the way Odo and Quark are playing off of each other, though I find it hard to believe Odo doesn't know the rules of Dabo--I'd think he'd scrutinize them in hopes of catching Quark cheating his customers. Maybe there was a separate Cardassian Gaming Control Board that took care of that stuff. I'm probably the only person who was bitterly disappointed we didn't get an hour-long demonstration of the rules of dabo.
As soon as I saw the ticking remote control in the replicator, I knew it was a Bajoran booby trap, although it's impossible to say "Bajoran booby trap" with a straight face. Just imagine Burt Ward saying, "Holy Bajoran booby traps, Batman!"
The other high point of the episode was Quark's outfit, which included green high-waisted pants and a shirt and jacket combo that traces its origins to Sergeant Pepper. Cool stuff.
Besides that, I don't know. Some very touching affectionate moments between Jake and Sisko. Kira got to kick some ass and do some investigating. So far, she and Quark are my favorite characters.
It was a passable episode with some great moments, but nothing that exceptional.

Have you & your family started yelling "DABO!" along with the players yet? Or, just at random whenever the wheel can be seen? The Possum household has found that to be an important part of our DS9 enjoyment.

Although I did get a big chuckle when I shouted out "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra" when Dax went aphasic. It didn't hurt that we saw a few minutes of "Darmok" earlier in the day so it was fresh in everyone's mind.

I also recommend shouting "Morn" when you see him in the background of Quark's bar. You may not yet realize who Morn is, but you can start looking for him.

Gotta love a guy with a huge head wearing a ski jacket!
I've picked up who he is through osmosis (just like I know Sisko does something questionable in a few episodes I haven't seen) but I'm looking forward to discovering the joys of Morn for myself.
