Shatner's Totality Trilogy

The point is not to condemn or judge, merely to point out that the Shatnerverse novels are in a distinct continuity from the majority of novels, just as the Crucible trilogy was.

I've heard of The Totality, but what are they really? What's the revelation? They were in a war with the Progenitors/Preservers. Ok. PM me with these answers. Belle Reve?

Oh, I'm not criticizing (amazingly enough, I know.) I'm just commenting on it. I could care less if Shatner remains consistent with the rest of the novel line. I rather like that he's got his own little corner of things.

That being said, Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens have been consciencious to maintain continuity with the rest of the literary universe when possible...

That's not quite true. The Totality trilogy has some major chronological contradictions with the rest of the lit; Bajor is still not a UFP member several years after it joined in the DS9 Relaunch, and Titan's initial first contact mission in the Shatnerverse takes place more than a year after the equivalent event in the TTN series.

Also, Scotty is retired from Starfleet, and not the head of the SCE.

Elaithin: Me, too. That's why I'm hoping to get around to a TNG-era cameo with Kirk & Dr. Pulaski aboard the U.S.S. Exeter, with Erika Benteen. I'm hoping to come up with something regarding the Totality but I've got a slew of research to do on them still as I've started a new job in Park Royal (West Vancouver).

BTW I just remembered something from when I was reading it. Was anyone else reminded of "Heart of Darkness" in regards to Norinda stretching out her arms and spreading out darkness? I remember reading the book in high school and always feeling like that moment was out of a comic book or something. Coincidence, or homage?

OK, I've got a question:

It's pretty much implied in the trilogy that the Totality has been active since at least four billion years ago when they first attacked the Milky Way galaxy and the Progenitors (who may or may not be the Preservers; I'm unsure about all that) created the galactic barrier to stop it. If so, then what has the Totality been doing in all that time? Has it gone through all the other galaxies in the universe by the late 24th century? That wouldn't leave much for humanity to encounter when and if they eventually move beyond the Milky Way.

By the way, did the Progenitors seed other galaxies as well in the distant past? It's just that we know a humanoid race once lived in Andromeda from that planet of androids Harry Mudd found.

The Progenitors and Preservers have absolutely nothing in common aside from being scriptwriters' rationalizations for humanoid aliens. The one known instance of Preserver activity, taking a group of Native Americans from Earth, was in modern times, just 2-3 centuries ago. To put that in perspective, that's sometime around when Guinan was born. It makes no sense to equate them with a species that lived billions of years before multicellular life even arose on Earth. Especially since their methods are completely different. The Progenitors created life where there was none and programmed its entire evolutionary course; the Preservers simply trucked it around.
