Shatner's bee sting during the filming of Where no Man has..

DumbDumb2007

Commander
Was reading the making of star Trek by Stephen Whitfield. I have had it for years.
Did Shatner really get stung by his eye during the filming of the Where no Man has Gone Before pilot ep?
I recall it was a bug from either a bee, hornet's or wasp nest. That must have really been painfull. I was stung by a bunch of wasps on my bare feet when I was 4. i ended up in the hospital for a day until the swelling went down.

Why would Stephen Whitfield need to make it up?

IIRC, the actors and crew were in danger of being stung by bees every time that ST ventured out to Vasquez Rocks for location work.

George Takei was also stung in the mouth by a bee - he swallowed one while jogging around the block - the day before he commenced filming on one of the movies, ST III or ST IV. They were worried the swelling would show on camera.

The bees were a real problem in the studio though weren't they? (more than one time they were a problem) I thought that was also in the Solow/Justman book.

This can save your life.

It is very interesting and it is a pity so few people know about it.

I understand at least 40000 a year die from various bites.

I keep a piezo device I took out from a cigerette lighter with me all the time.It has saved me many times from various insect bites including bees.
I also have a battery operated spark igniter in the house.
This cost me $3.99 and generates sparks at 4 a second.

You should use it as soon as possible, preferably within 3 hours for snakebite and immediately if you are allergic to bee venom.

You should click it at least 20 times around the bite to make sure. You cannot harm yourself with it unless you have a delicate pacemaker.

You can also buy it on the web for $7,it's known as a "mosquito clicker",but not confined to mosquitos.

Last year a multi millionaire was having a barbecue with all his fellow executives in the garden when he got stung by a bee and had an allergic reaction. They took him to hospital but he died after 3 hours.

Amazing a man with so much wealth and power can be brought down by a lowly insect.

I mean he was surrounded by guards, maids, butlers,he had a bently,a ferrari,he wore a diamond ring with gold cufflinks and so on...and yet and yet he still died after getting stung by a bee but because he did not have this vital piece of knowledge he died.

No one knew that the piezoelectric spark generator in their cigarette lighters in their pockets could have saved him if they had used it immediately.

Hmmm, I find this newly gained info ... shocking

You know, it's funny this topic was brought up. Two days ago I was sucker-stung by a bee on the back of my neck. Fuck you Jerry Seinfeld.

Why? It wouldn't make any difference to to the bee how much money the guy had -- it would never be able to spend a dime of it.

"Bz bz bz!"
"Major credit card with two valid forms of identification?"
"Bz?"
"Sorry, bud. You'll have to leave now."

I was actually looking at it from the victim's perspective.
He must have thought with all his vast wealth and power and security guards he was invincible.

I know. It was a joke. ;)

Hopefully it wasn't any more a detriment to your career than it was for Shatner's.

I wouldn't be surprised. On the 40th Anniversary Special about the Christie's Auction they were looking at the IAMD sets. Takei said that Shatner got in trouble because he pulled a Jelly Bean off of a set piece and started eating them in between takes. Don't know if it's true or not.

What jellybean of a set piece?

Re: Shatner's bee sting during the filming of Where no Man h

The buttons were made of jelly beans.

Re: Shatner's bee sting during the filming of Where no Man h

Some of the buttons on Uhura's console were supposedly jelly beans, so I've heard.

Doesn't matter, really, but it's a good story.

As for bees in studios, any big old barn of a building such as a soundstage will be likely to have problems with bees or wasps constructing nests up in the rafters, even without the jelly beans. I'd imagine getting rid of them is probably a somewhat lucrative specialty industry in the Culver City/Hollywood/Burbank belt.

You can use smoke to make bees leave.Just light a smokey paper in a metal bucket and wave it about. The bees will think a forest fire has started and will flee.Or use ultrasonic sounds to scare them.

Holy crap, forget Shatner and his bee sting, can the mods please take this potential fatal advice out of the TOS forum?

When in doubt, seek a doctor, not a smoker :brickwall:

Re: Shatner's bee sting during the filming of Where no Man h

I don't think anyone is going to take Uptightgirl's advice too seriously.
