Shatner whining a decoy?

Here's something to think about... I haven't seen this suggested anywhere.

I kind of wonder if all this William Shatner "I'm not in Trek XI and Leonard Nimoy is, wah wah wah" crying is a deception tactic. Partially because I'd like to think he wouldn't be that immature and unprofessional, and partially because of what happened in nuBSG with Katee Sackhoff - they acted like they were killing her off and booting her off the show and then lo and behold it was just a ruse. And they hid it pretty well.

I can just see William Shatner after the movie is released and everyone just sits there in the theater gasped at the surprise of his cameo, patting himself on the back and saying he had the fans sooooo fooled.

It just annoys me that William Shatner is being such a baby about this. Paul McGillion wasn't cast in the role he wanted, and he's actually being very respectful and professional in all the interviews I've seen.

That has been suggested before... who knows? I guess we'll have to wait for spoilers or for people who've actually seen the movie to spill the beans.

I've been saying this repeatedly. I think it's just as likely he's been asked and is being paid to do this. Whether he really is in the movie or not is irrelevant -- I think it is all a big distraction, set up by people that understand Trek fandom better than Trek fandom understands itself. The Internet wants something to talk about, and if it's not BS like this, then it's the latest plot rumor or spy photo. The Shat shit and whatever will follow take some of the focus off the production, which I assume the makers of this film want to reveal at their own pace.

Of course, I'm also firmly convinced that Bigfoot is real, and that men from the future killed JFK, so you should take my conspiracy ramblings with a suitably large grain of salt.

He's giving the movie so much P.R., that I'd be quite surprised if he wasn't getting paid, by a Bigfoot on his ranch, funneled through J.J. Abrhams personal M.I.B. squad.

Said it all along. Look for Shatner to make a "surprise" appearance in the final version of the trailer, probably in November 2008.

Shatner is just being Shatner. Playful, funny and a dick all at the same time. He's not in the movie.

not a decoy

To paraphrase "This week in Trek" from Trekmovie.com:

"Shatner's still not in the movie..." and he's not going to be. Shatner's whining is a decoy for nothing. He's actually that douchey.

The writers and producers are being coy, too. "There's still time," "Anything can happen," and all that crap. How about a definitive statement, once and for all? A simple, "No." Period. No chance. Not even trying. Bill who? No equivocation.
As it is, the "is he or isn't he?" buzz is starting to have diminishing PR returns.

Only to you. There is an old rule of thumb in advertising. Just when you are getting sick and tired of the ad campaign, the public is only catching on. I know this is buzz we're talking about and not a deliberate ad campaign but same difference.

Buzz is almost always good for a movie and this is classic Hollywood insider buzz.

Methinks people don't get Shatner's sense of humor... the whining is meant as comedy, but it's a very particular wry sort of Shatneresque comedy that is coming across as bitchiness. I am confident that he's not in the movie, but am also confident that he's not really being such a prick about the whole thing but is merely having us all on.

I "get him" just fine, though he's rarely as funny as his fans seem to think - narcissistic hamming is a giggle sometimes, but "wry" it isn't.

And people who've dealt with him can tell you he's quite capable of being a prick, so that "confidence" is...speculative.

It's a possibility I have thought about. It's very plausible.

It's also GREAT marketing for the new movie. Everywhere Shatner goes, people will be asking him about not getting a part in the new movie... you know the NEW MOVIE... The NEW STAR TREK MOVIE... William Shatner's not in THE NEW STAR TREK MOVIE... STAR TREK: DECEMBER 2008!

My gosh, they are getting free press everywhere. And you know the old saying, any press is good press. He might even be on Paramount's dole to bring notice to the new film.

No, the producers don't like what's happening.

Ah, you have inside information. Excellent.

And I believe Andy Kaufman is on line two...

Nope. At least one has said as much on the Internet, and explained as clearly as is possible that the situation remains unsettled.

Just because you don't pay attention to such things doesn't mean that other people are claiming "inside information."

You know, the thing about copping a hip skeptical attitude - "wheels within wheels, everybody knows that all publicity is good publicity and this is all a scam" - is that the posture implies certain experience or information to justify it. You can't carry it off just because it sounds cool to you in front of the mirror.

Ignore Mr. Bailey.

He thinks far too highly of himself and even goes so far as to entertain delusions that he's actually important enough to warrant "inside" information of any kind.
