Shatner scheduled to talk to Bob Orci?

Shatner says he would do the movie if it's a meaningful part, "a role that had something to do with the turning of the plot." Still, the 83-year-old actor says he's not sure how they'd bring him back now — 20 years after his character was killed off in "Star Trek: Generations."

"That was so long ago. How do they bring me back physically like this? I don't know," he says.

This pretty much spells out two things:

1. Shatner wants his role to be central to the story, not a cameo.

2. He wants to be Prime Kirk, not older nuKirk (the man's not naive: he understand the premise of the reboot).

I think with the 2009 movie Shatner said he wanted a central role.

He didn't say he didnt want to be old NuKirk, he just can't fathom how he can physically come back so long after Generations.

i hope Orci has a good idea and he can get Shatner and Nimoy reunited on screen. I loved the 2009 movie, not just for Nimoy's role and I for one think that an on-screen reunion would make the whole thing worthwhile; hopefully not in a throwaway cameo

if its Old Pine Kirk I think id be disappointed. I want to see Kirk Prime

Yes he may lead a different life, but if Shatner is surely giving essentially the same performance as he did in those last movies would there be much different? The characterisation can be the same. Also if it's time travel they'd be back on the Enterprise (or JJverse Enterprise-A. OR JJverse Excelsior with Takei as Capt Sulu! Will Uhura as first officer and Chekov as Navigator/Sec Chief) in brand spanking new [i.e. after the current ones] Starfleet uniform which would be supercool.

I'd hate a Deadly Years scene as Shatner & Nimoy would be possibly playing weak, doddering old men before reverting into the younger stronger heroes.

Prime of course would be best scenario, the Nexus can possibly pass through different timelines. Maybe Kirk Prime got dropped of 20 years prior to Star Trek 2016 so therefore aged into how he is now.

I know he's the one they're all talking about but isn't there a rumour Leonard Nimoy will be joining him? He looked well in the VW Germany ads.

This is sci fi, Orci can work it out. obviousaly though Pine and Quinto will be the main ones and their predecessors will be guest stars, but I hope it's a decent spot.

Forget Generations. I'm looking for the compelling story and theme. I'd rather see something along the lines of TUC... where Shatner and Nimoy were suddenly concerned with their own age and inflexibility. Contrast that DIRECTLY with the dynamic characters of the younger Pine and Quinto. Tell a compelling story which requires and balances the strengths of both sides.

"Prime" Kirk comes looking for "Prime" Spock to take him home, somehow, and the big reveal is that they aren't from what we consider the Primeverse, either! Their Kirk lived past Veridian III.

Actually, reading his quote, it sounds like he doesn't understand at all that Abrams's movies are a reboot, if he's asking how they'd bring him back from the dead from a film that has nothing to do with the reboot. Or at least, that's how I interpret his thought process.

So in other words, Shatner probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference if he was playing Prime Kirk or nuKirk.

Nah, too complicated and too focused on one 20-year old movie. The simpler solution is to do what Trek has done numerous times, just not on this "level." Ignore previously-established canon: in this case, "Generations". I'd be fine with that. I like to think everything that happened post-"All Good Things" is speculation, anyway.

his stupid ego. I have a bad feeling about this. I'd rather not have them change the script just to have Shatner at any cost (especially now that the rumor is out) and cave under his demands to have a big important role.

Whereas I thought Shatner appearing was a terrible fanwanky mistake ("Khaaaaan!" x10,000, so to speak) until I read that he's playing an aged version of Pine's Kirk. ST'09 and ID are defined by the Kirk and Spock friendship, getting at glimpse of them as BFF's in their hundreds would be fantastic.

In Trek-Prime, Kirk died in his 60's and Spock went to live in a cave under the Romulan capital. I want these versions to have a happier ending.

Plus, they can drop a line about Romulus being safely evacuated, tying up that loose end from ST'09.

Maybe some kind of Dream Sequence Warpy Time thing that brings together footage from his early days in TOS up to "now?" Like in the Man Trap/Cage?

It is the 50th, and, like him or not, he is Him. (wow)

Kirk retrospective at Star Fleet?
Cadets selling bootleg Kirk HoloTapes?
Ship's Computer picks up Priceline commercials and Episodes of Boston Legal that have been spreading out into space and gets Priceline Virus, where Shat somehow embeded the retrospective in and took over the ships computer screens?
Something.

I'd rather not have them change the script just to have Shatner ...
I was under the impression that a finished script didn't yet exist.

Plus, they can drop a line about Romulus being safely evacuated ...
Leaving behind only one person, Nero's wife.

No wonder he was pissed.

I still am holding on to the hope that Shatner will play a original character, not prime Kirk, not old nuKirk. And that character will play a major role in the sequence of events.

I have a sense we're just going down the garden path, here. Within a few weeks or so of shooting, the story on both sides will be there wasn't a suitable or agreeable way to work Shatner in. I'd give that about an 92 percent chance of happening.

I kind of question the sincerity of what's going on now. It's very reminiscent of the "will he or won't he be in it" rumors that floated around ST09. Yes, a role was indeed conceived for him, but I can't imagine anyone thought Shatner would take it, even as they wrote it.

I don't think he wants to appear in any Trek movie just as sentimental twaddle, and I don't blame him. But still, he has to think it's nice to be out there and have one's ego stroked a bit either way. It is a sort of relevance and paying homage in its own right.

I don't begrudge anyone else their wishes or opinions, but wouldn't it just be distracting to have Shatner in the movie playing another character? I think it would be distracting to the dedicated fans for associative reasons, and just confusing to casual fans.

The other thing I wonder about all this is whether there is some diplomatic way to suggest Bill get in a bit better shape. Is that a ridiculous idea given his age? Maybe. But he's an energetic guy. He could do it. He's spoken/written openly about having done it before for this role. I think I read that Carrie Fisher agreed to slim down for Episode VII.

I've got no problem with Shatner appearing in the next movie, it is the 50th after all, but I cannot for the life of me imagine Bad Robot putting out out a film that requires the audience to be familiar with a 20+ year old Trek movie that not only isn't held in a very high regard, wasn't a big box office hit, and involved one of, if not the worst plot devices in the entire movie franchise to get him there in the first place.

For me he has to play Pine Kirk or a massive rolling of the eyes will be taking place, and on a bigger scale than British Khan, reverse reactor room scene or any Khaaan scream.

If he plays Prime Kirk, then they just need to ignore the fact that the character died in Generations. Let fandom duke it out over the ramifications of such a move. It won't much matter to general audiences.
