Share your fannish photos.

Don't think I've ever seen this topic covered here. I was curious if anyone had convention or DW (old or new) event pics they'd be willing to share.

Lord knows I've been to my share of cons over the years, and collected plenty of pics.

I'll Start off with a couple of shots from 1985. Dixie-Trek in Atlanta, GA. If I recall correctly, the guest line up was Jon Pertwee, Majel Barret, and Terry Nation.

Shot of me and Mr Pertwee in the autograph line.

And a pic of my best friend with him outside the guest banquet. I remember right after I snapped the shot she gave him a HUGE hug. :)

Sorry if the quality is meh. This was back in the day of crappy Instamatics.

I have a photo of me and Pertwee, but I've never scanned it in.

Nice shots man!

There's a photo of me and Mark Strickson getting drunk at a christmas party last year but I won't publish it cos I look real shitfaced.

There is a photo of me and Tom Baker from when I was six and he was in Australia for a promo and I am wearing his iconic hat. He was dressed in his Doctor's outfit and he also wrapped part of the long scarf around my neck. The photo is in an album at my parents place. I really should get it and scan it.

I remeber asking him if he had the TARDIS with him and he looked at me and put his finger to his lips and said "SSSSSHHHHHHH" and pointed towards a door which was a staff only corridor at the shopping center we were in. I remember wanting to go to the door and see the TARDIS afterwards but my mum wouldn't let me. I still go to this mall regularly and I think about that day everytime I walk past the spot where I met Tom and that door where the TARDIS is hiding. A few months after meeting Tom there I wandered off from my mum and brother and went to the door and opened it. No TARDIS! I was so dissappointed and I got into so much trouble for wandering off but it was worth it.

Demonland, that is the best story I've heard all day.

I remember that day so well in my mind and everytime I go past that spot I am literally transported back to that place in time. All the surrounding shops and all the fixtures and fittings are now very modern but the spot where Tom was and that door are exactly the same and I can picture it all so clearly almost 30 years later. Next time I am there I will take a picture of the door that hides the TARDIS.

That. Is an awesome story! :bolian:

I'm fairly amused by the idea that these actors actually embrace(d) their convention appearances rather than dismissing them as an easy paycheck. You'd never catch Stewart or Brooks or Olmos or their ilk in costume at a convention, though perhaps that was more common in the past? I've heard Colin Baker has a custom outfit he had made specifically for his convention appearances. Wild stuff man, wild.

Darn, I should've named this thread 'Share your fannish stories'. Oh well. C'mon break out some of those old photos and scan'em!

Pertwee was a showman from way back in the 40's, and took his work seriously. Every time I saw him doing a DW related interview or appearance onstage, he was in his his Doctors outfit. I guess he though people were more interested in seeing 'The Doctor' rather than plain old Jon Pertwee. I'm trying to remember if Troughton dressed up for his appearances as well. But I don't think I ever remember the other actors 'dressing up' for con appearances. Though Tom Baker is known to wear the ocassional long jacket and normal sized scarf. :)

Anyway, A couple more from the opening ceremonies where he's wearing the complete Five Doctors ensemble. He's flanked by the other convention guests Terry Nation, and Majel Barret.

I've got a few more with Colin and JNT that I'll post tomorrow.

I would imagine that's a function of the difference in target audiences between Doctor Who and, say, Star Trek or especially Battlestar Galactica.

Star Trek is written primarily for adults, though most of it is designed so that children can watch it without objection (even if they'd get bored by it). Battlestar Galactica -- the RTD one, not the original -- is designed for adults, and children just shouldn't watch it, period.

By contrast, Doctor Who, at the end of the day, is written for eight-year-olds -- either the actual eight-year-olds who watch the show and hide behind the couch when the Daleks appear, or the inner eight-year-olds of the adults who watch it, too. So when you're an actor who's played the Doctor and you're appearing in public -- at least, to these fellows -- you're not just an actor playing a character. You have a special obligation to bring that character to life, live, for the children you're going to meet.

It's like playing Santa Claus in that regard. You're not doing it for the adults -- you're doing it for the kids.

That would be my inference, anyway. I wonder if Eccleston, Tennant, or Smith would do it that way?

tennant quite probably would. ecclestone, not so much.

smith maybe.

I think Tennant and Smith probably would.

You never know with Eccleston. He has this image of a very adult, very serious actor, but he's spoken about how moved he was by all the letters written to him by children during his tenure as the Doctor. So who knows?

I've read stories about him, too. Where he took an extra hour after a play to talk to a ten-year-old who had dragged his parents to the play because he was such a Doctor Who fan. The kid wanted to be a footballer one day, and he and Eccles talked Doctor Who and football. That's a very nice guy, if you ask me. I think he just doesn't actually "get" Doctor Who, so he is wary of anyone over ten approaching him in praise of being a science fiction superhero, rather than his more serious roles. At least, that's the notion I've gotten from the actor in everything I've seen him in.

Also, I think it's common knowledge he has slight agoraphobia or something, doesn't he?

Now we're talkin Borg! :)

Speaking of fannish shots, here are a couple of me at Panopticon New Orleans back around 86. I was helping a friend move one of the cons Daleks upstairs to storage for the night and maybe getting a little TOO friendly. :D

Well, I guess I should go ahead and wrap this thread up with the rest of my photos. As I mentioned above these were taken at Panopticon New Orleans, way back around '86 or so during the infamous 'Hiatus'. Apart from plenty of fannish guests, JNT, Colin Baker, and Nick Courtney were the GOH's.
It was my first out of state con, and needless to say much fun was had by all as we pretty much took over the Doubletree hotel. I have plenty more, but don't think anyone would be interested in costumers.

Two shots of the opening ceremonies, with a guy from the mayors office presenting everyone with honorary NO citizenships. You had to admire these guys for lettign the con dress them up like this. :)

Nick looking quite pleased at the Saturday afternoon autograph session.

And of course.
