Well, the 80's cult film Remo Williams is a favorite of mine. It was the first movie I ever saw with kids my age sans parents. And I loved the story, and how the music really brought out the emotions of each scene, from it's Indiana Jones (with an Eastern vibe)-like theme to the sad music when Remo realizes his own teacher was contracted to kill him. I loved following the progression as a kid.. considering that there were no spaceships .. that was something it accomplished for this guy who was once 11 years old

Now Shane Black is adapting the Destroyer novels, upon which the original film was based. dds are that his name won't be Remo, and who knows what Chuin will be like. I can almost guarantee you he won't be as col as Joel Grey's version.

Did anyone see the original? What do you think of this news?
 
Yeah, nothing can beat Joel Grey's Chiun.

I remember loving the novels when I was a teen, and I was even a big fan of the television series spin-off of the movie, absurd as it was (such as Chiun running up a stream of water from what I think was a firehose).

As long as they keep the whole god bit out of it (much like Dexter), it could be pretty awesome. But like you said, it'll be hard to find anyone who's as good as Chiun as Grey. Mostly because that kind of stereotyping will be seriously frowned on today.
 
I like the original movie but always felt it was a little goofy. I hope they go a tad bit more serious this time but while still being fun. It is where I first noticed Kate Mulgrew, I really liked her in this movie. I like Shane Black for the remake, think he can bring the right balance of action and dark humor this series needs.

Now lets think about casting. While I agree that Joel Grey's Chiun was inspired casting, I would really like to see an asian in the role. How about Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, he can do serious and comedy and is excellent at action. Can we switch genders for Chiun this time? Pei-pei Cheng would be awesome, really think about it. Now Remo, David Bautista? Is that going to far? I just loved his performance in GotG. Think he could bring the right balance to this.
 
I always thought it was hilarious that when the original Remo film was being cast, some of the actors who auditioned for it said they were experts at Sinanju. Which is, of course, a FICTIONAL martial art. :guffaw:
 
I love, love, love the movie. I love it like only a 12 years old can love an 80s' movie.

I've read a few of the books, some parts are fun, some not so much, but they kinda feel dated and shallow to me.

I hope they do a great remake. It will be hard to strike the right balance like the first one, but one can hope.
 
I just hope Black's not doing this INSTEAD of that Doc Savage reboot he was also attached to.

With all due respect to Remo, I'd rather have a new DOC SAVAGE flick.

Takeshi Kitano won't do any American movies due to the lack of control he felt he had with Johnny Mnemonic, according to an interview he did in a magazine in the late 1990's/early 2000's (he's only done one other American movie so far, IIRC.) George would be perfect for the role, as would Cary Tagawa and a few others.

With all due respect to the Doc Savage concept, it might not be doable these days. A way would have to be found to make Doc Savage work for contemporary audiences beyond the die-hard fans of the novels, comic books and & crappy feature film (for example, minorities are most likely going to object to Savage getting gold from a native South American tribe to finance what he does; maybe he can get his wealth from ice diamond mining, or from some other way that doesn't involve people freely giving somebody their wealth, no matter how altruistic he is.) Women are also not going to tolerate Pat Savage being just a damsel in distress, or being left behind by Doc and his pals when the go on an adventure because 'this is too dangerous for a woman.' And considering how very few things set in the 30's and 40's do at the box office (with a few prominent exceptions), the producers of said Doc Savage movie might have to set it in the present day, just like this modern version of the concept was.

If it's a faithful adaptation of the original novels we need:

* A scene where Remo breaks a cock-ring with the power of his mind
* A scene where some goons break in on Chuin while he is watching his 'beautiful dramas (soaps) and he slaughters them.
