There appears to be several variations of this lost episode, are there any recommendations as to which one is the best to watch?? I am considering watching the Tom Baker amended version...or is the Mcgann version better?? which is official continuity? there's a radio version too right?? I am confused...

 

[The Nth Doctor]

There's three versions, although two of them are mostly the same:

1) Tom Baker's version which is incomplete due to workers' strike.

Two varieties of Paul McGann's version (with Lalla Ward and John Leeson returning):

2) The flash animated webcast made by Big Finish and shown on BBC's website.

3) The same audio play was broadcast on BBC 7 and later released on CD as part of Big Finish's audio play line with small audio variations.


As much as I love Tom Baker, I actually prefer Paul McGann's version, partially because it's actually complete, as oppose to Tom Baker's linking narration for the VHS release of his version. Additionally, McGann has a fantastic rapport with Lalla Ward which is also heard in Neverland and Zagreus. Both essentially tell the same story, the only major difference is that The Eighth Doctor picks up Romana and K-9 from Gallifrey because he feels like an adventure was left incomplete (as per The Five Doctors). From there, the overall story is more or less the same.

2 versions of the paul mcgann??

To simplify things, one is audio-only and the other is accompanied by flash animation, viewable on the BBC site.

The McGann version was the first Big Finish audio I ever listened to (actually have the CD version, as this was before their download service began), and got me hooked on the 8th Doctor audios. It really is well done, and as Emh said, the rapport between the Doctor and Romana is great.

Version 1 is the video - the recorded scenes with 1990s Tom Baker linking material.

There's a 4th version too - last year off his own back Superfan Ian Levine got all the surviving members of the cast (sans Tom - too expensive) to record all the missing dialogue, with stand ins for those were needed.

However he is no fan of audio Dr Who - it was recorded so the missing scenes can be animated to be combined with the existing footage. This animation will then be offered to 2|E take it or leave it - though there are no doubt legal reasons they can't just take it. Of course this is all rather expensive, and he has sought fans to invest towards the project.

As it is 2|E have their own plans for Shada we don't know about yet - so that will be version 5.

They will do the final commercial version(s) that can be bought by the public. It will probably be paired with Nightmare Of Eden.

what are- is 2/entertain anyways? do they refilm scenes for Doctor who episodes, or do 3D animation? What about the strange episode I saw of the 3rd Doctor and some thing to do with the time lords, set between his 2nd and 3RD regen??

2|E is just the company that comission and distribute the DVDs, they allocate the funds for the extras. I think the whole company is owned by BBC Worldwide (for the moment anyway) since the other share holder went under.

So when a story comes up for release various extras producers can pitch to do new CGI, or lengthy documentaries, it really depends what state the original episodes are in, and what's left after any restoration. Some unspent funds have gone into restoring Pertwee episodes apparently.

Devious is what you are talking about, its a glorified fan video, that's still unfinished! It's merely worthy on inclusion since the last scene happened to feature Jon Pertwee's final appearance as the Doctor.

Just to fill in a blank, 2 Entertain included Devious as a bonus feature on the DVD of The War Games.

However, I think we've run into one of the wonderful things about the Internet - things become outdated quickly. I have the latest version of Flash and it won't play the old version needed to view. And the other option is Real Player and I don't think anyone's used Real Player in 6 years. You can try the link above, and it might work. A lot of the BBC website material is only viewable within the UK, however I have found that some older items are grandfathered and available worldwide - I was able to watch Shada from this site a couple of years ago and I'm in Canada. But since then I upgraded my computer, and of course today upgrading means losing the ability to do stuff you used to be able to do...

Failing all that, the Shada webcast shows up on YouTube every so often, too... (Note: I'm just talking about the webcast here - if you want to hear the extended audio drama version, you should order a copy of the CD from Big Finish!)
