SGU 1.5: A different show?

I have watched every episode so far and admire in some respects the restraint the writers have shown in their pacing. I will say - however - that this admiration might not be present if I weren't a Stargate fan prior to the airing of the series. I have enjoyed it, with a couple of episodes leaving me wanting more. However this is the first season of a series and you can be inclined to be more lenient on the initial world-building of it (on the hope of a satisfying payoff down the track).

But that said, it cannot sustain the current pace IMO. If season 2 kicks off at a sedentary pace I'll be back to check the series out every three months as I did Atlantis. SGU is for my entertainment. I'm not there for it as a fan of the franchise thru thick and thin.

Universe is actually my first Stargate series. I saw the original movie and I know a little bit about SG-1 and Atlantis, but that's about it. I do find the characters in SGU likeable or at least relatable--even Rush--and it has succeeded in making me tune in each week to find out what happens next, something I really couldn't say about SG1 and SGA.

The show is a little more watchable now. But it still is seriously lacking in potential and flawed.

1. The characters are still mostly boring. They need to be likable and have cool and interesting personalities.

2. Real conflict still does not exist on this show. They show something cool like an alien T-Rex and then deflate your excitement over it by not making it a good portion of the conflict within an episode.

3. The scripts and or the acting still doesn't really bring any performances that are note worthy or interesting.

I mean, I want to like this show. In fact, lately I have been hooked into watching it. But SGU needs to get back to the basics of what made Stargate good to begin with if it is going to succeed in the long term.

"Snoozegate Universe" according to a mate of mine. It's just too slow and boring. A slower pace is fine if there were action, mystery, intrigue or suspense, but there's nothing interesting happening apart from 20 minute periods every few episodes.

Replacing all the characters with new ones would be job 1. None of them are interesting or likeable in the slightest.

I personally like Rush, Greer (when he's not being paranoid), James, TJ, and a bunch of the supporting characters (Brody, Volker, a few others). But I agree that the show could afford to lose a bunch of characters, particularly Young, Wray (WTF does she do?), Eli, Chloe, and Scott. Eli in particular irritates me do the whole "fan stand-in character" thing, plus an interview with David Blue implies that the writers might move towards making Eli into a supergenius, so I'd rather not see that.

True. I'm waiting for the kick off and ... ?

With all due respect to the writers...no rush, but hurry up.

Ive been against this show the day the writers leaked info about what the show would be about. But though first 5 episodes werent awlful but that ones after that were till the aliens showed up.

But the show is improving but still needs alot of help as i cant stand most of the characters. Most of them just rub me the wrong way and those whom watched SG1 you need a strong group of characters that you love so you care about them in episodes that might not be the greatest.

I like Eli and the prego chick and the chick with the big mellons. Rest are blah!
What they need is a change. Arrive at a planet that is a station for many aliens to come and hang out. Ala Deep Space Nine or stations in Farscape. Swoop out half the cast, get some dam aliens on the show ala Farscape and get over the moody depression crap and have some adventures.

U are where no humans have been before so dam it explore and seige the opportunity of a lifetime.

Your in part of space where no human as been before so how about use that as a plot instead of wrong people and they dont get along, and oh yeah we are on a ship that cant get home.

The guest star in Sabotage (the disabled hyperdrive expert) was a breath of fresh air. She was more likeable, personable and interesting than all the regular characters put together. Better actor than most too.

I like Eli, Rush, and Greer. Scott's an idiot, Chloe's even dumber, and Wray wants to be intimidating but comes across as more of a spoiled 12 year old snob than anything else.
I also like the supporting cast, like TJ, Volker, and Brody.

1.5 definitely has a different feel, but I can't really narrow it down...less shaky camera, although there are still the oddly blurred shots. and the Rush and Young rivalry has been tossed out the window along with a lot of the other character conflicts. I still like the show, but I hope it gets a more coherent storyline. Even though they aren't supposed to, each episode still seems like a standalone.
