SG1 and Doctor Who -- sense of wonder

I was watching Doctor Who this evening, and something suddenly occurred to me.

The responses of people who step into the Tardis for the first time struck me, and then it hit me why... it's the same sense of "What the....?" and cognative dissonance one sees in people who see the "kawoosh" in Stargate SG1 for the first time.

It's a normal person's FIRST experience with Something Beyond what their world experience can explain.

I particularly remember the response of that female air force cadet (in the SG1 ep with the planet with the electronic killer fireflies) and of Sam's father the first time they saw the Stargate do its thing, and the time Rose first entered the Tardis, ran out of it, ran around the thing, and then back inside, all with a sort of "what the hell?" look on her face.

I love that sort of thing -- especially when acted well. That sense that there is more out there than we are familiar with, and that... well, that sensawonda.

My Stargate knowledge starts and ends with the Russell/Spader movie, but I definitely agree with you about Doctor Who. It's not just the sense of wonder you see when a new companion first discovers that the TARDIS is 'bigger on the inside,' it's the sense of wonder that's maintained throughout the whole series with each new planet or time period. That's why the series with Catherine Tate was probably my favorite so far... of all the companions we've seen since the show came back, Donna had the greatest sense of wonder, and kept it up consistently from beginning to end.
