Sfdebris reviews the first season of Discovery

The Overlord

Sfdebris has reviewed the first season of Discovery and I may not agree with him exactly, there was legitimate points here:

I do think Michael was a bit too much of the focus, at the expense of other characters, the war became too much background stuff and had a rushed conclusion.

That being said, I still think there are interesting elements to work with here and I think learning a few lessons for the future would be good. The first season is often the weakest for a Star Trek show, so I do not mind that this one had a few problems (I would still watch it over the first season of TNG). I hope the next season does make a few improvements, I like Michael well enough, but give the other characters more to do.

Compared to his other ST reviews, these seemed more like detailed episode synopses. Stay away unless you've already seen the series, as there are many spoilers.

He didn't want to do a proper review until he finished the Season.

But he does critique each episode. I don't visit his forums, but apparently people there are upset he isn't bashing it more lmao.

I think Chuck's assessment is fair. There's a lot of things that didn't work out or feels earned.

I connected a lot more with Michael so I was more invested in her emotional wellbeing.

There's quite a bit of room for improvement and I'm optimistic that they'll succeed.

Oh believe me. And many on that forum seem to cite Midnight’s Edge as a legitimate source for what’s going on with the show and such.

How quickly the war was concluded and the lack of lasting effects when it seemed the Federation was losing badly? Hope they avoid these pitfalls in future, just seemed like they didn't care about that story in the end.

As per his usual style, Chuck does a great top of reviewing and summing up his opinion on Discovery. The one that stuck out to me was the lack of connection to Michael. For me, I definitely see how a lack of connection to Michael would impact overall feel of the work.

The other one is the fact that it doesn't feel "joyous" or "fun." Now, I know individual experience varies, so I'll explain myself. Star Trek has always had a military vibe for me. The first episode I watched was "Balance of Terror" or, as the original working title was "Das Boot in Space with less Germans." I also thoroughly enjoyed TUC, or the Cold War in Space. For me, the war tone of Discovery wasn't as off putting as was the inclusion of the Mirror Universe.

Overall, I get Chuck's reasonings, but still enjoy the show.

Heh...
"Das Boot" wasn't even an idea in someone's head, never mind being a movie back then, but I got a chuckle outta that.
:techman:

Michael Burnham the Chosen One does not approve of this review...
