Sfdebris Reviews Star Trek VIII - First Contact.

OK, Chuck's review of First Contact is up and while he picked a few holes in it (like time travel and the Borg Queen), he likes it for the most part (more than Mr. Plinkett does) and gave the movie a high score for its pacing and atmosphere.

Plinkett's review is biased and nitpicky. I think First Contact is a little overrated myself, but it's still in the upper echelon of Trek movies.

I slightly prefered First Contact to Star Trek XI, but it's a shame there's a long, rough, and unhappy ride between them with the disastrous Insurrection and Nemesis then a longish fallow period.

The death of the Borg Queen spelling the end of the mini-Collective around her, with the drone's heads exploding seems to be lazy writing but it could also be interpreted as the Queen sending a command signal to kill her drone "hostages" as a final 'Fuck you!' to spite Picard, if the drones were his men.

I can never get past the first 5 minutes of these reviews. The guy who does these has one of the most annoying voices I have ever heard.

And he's not funny. No matter how hard he tries.

I prefer Mr. Plinkett reviews over this guy. He seems to have a unhealthy grudge against TMP. My personal favorite. If i remembered correctly he gave it a 4. A falling grade:scream:.

His insight and humour are not as consistent and bracing as Plinkett's, but I obviously like this review more than Plinkett's review of the same movie, because Plinkett was such an unfair, obnoxious, nitpicky douchebag about it. This guy is a bit more positive about it, but even he is getting hung up on stuff that really doesn't matter and shouldn't detract from anyone's enjoyment of the movie. I laughed at the "cryptic bitch" line.

I have yet to read or listen to any review of "Star Trek: First Contact" that I didn't feel was really stretching or nitpicking too much in making its criticisms. I've even watched the movie trying to look for flaws so I can understand why some people hate it and I just can't find any. Part of the reason may be bias, but I also believe I can honestly say that even looking at it objectively, there's nothing major to be found wrong with it. To this day, it's still what I consider the closest thing we have to a perfect Star Trek movie.

To those criticizing Plinkett's review of First Contact, remember that he's basically a comedian first, and a film critic a distant second. Up until Avatar and Star Trek XI, he had never given a movie a positive review-he trashed all four of the TNG films as well as the first two SW prequels. Don't get me wrong-he makes valid points in his criticisms, but it's much easier to do a comedic review that trashes a movie than it is to do one that's basically praising one.

Which is why to me, his Avatar and Trek XI reviews are his worst ones-he's not trashing them very much because he liked them, so the review's not nearly as funny.

I gave Plinkett's "Star Trek: First Contact" review another shot. Tried to suppress my anger and look at it objectively. I guess I can see where he's coming from a little more, but I still think he gets way too worked up over shit that doesn't really matter. At the end when he's talking about all of these things the Borg Queen and Picard do that are kind of stupid and contrived, it made sense. Picard explaining to the Queen why she wanted him was obviously some clunky exposition for the audience that's illogical and doesn't really hold up to close scrutiny, but I still don't think it matters much.

As many have said, a solid argument can made that Khan does some rather idiotic things in his movie, but that never stopped many fans from loving that movie. I feel the same way as Jeff. No matter what "Plinkett" or "Sfdebris" say about this movie, I just don't see any flaws big enough to seriously detract from my enjoyment it. It's not like in the new Star Trek movie where there is sloppiness in plot and characterization that I find insulting to my intelligence (though I like the movie overall in spite of those things). "Star Trek: First Contact" may have plot holes and questionable character motives and lack the elegance of the best episodes of the series, but to me it's still the most satisfying Star Trek movie and second only to "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" in emotional resonance.

I just finished rewatching First Contact, and I adored it. At the end of the day, that's all that really matters for me.
Yep; correct, correct, correct Jeff! Truly the only opinion that matters is your own. A lot of critics are so full of s**t, buoyed up on their own sense of (imaginary) self-importance - actually believing people give a f**k.

I didn't detect a bias on his review of TMP. He rightfully ripped it apart. (He ripped into TSFS, TFF, and Generations as well. I wouldn't say he's got a bias against those films either.) True, the film was a financial success, but I would say that is more due to the fact that it was the first film. I'm not going to go more into it because sfdebris does a good job of going into it himself.

I love SFDebris' reviews. He always has some kind of insight, and he's hilarious. I'm glad he does them every week! I loved First Contact when it first came out, but I was a kid. I still love it, but the love has lessened a little bit. I think the review was good but I would have given it a slightly lower grade, especially with all the holes he points out.
