SFdebris Reviews "Generations".

Hmmmm, Chuck has done a surprisingly scathing review on Star Trek VII: Generations:

I must confess that I liked Star Trek VII: Generations, I've just watched it early this evening, and I prefered it to the latter two TNG movies that's for sure.

I agree with a lot of his points.

In addition, I think Malcolm MacDowell was grossly underused. If the point of the movie was to bring Kirk and Picard together in some kind of epic mission, either use Lursa/B'Etor as the catalyst for such or make MacDowell's character of Soran a huge villain for Kirk and Picard to fight.

Shit! His name is Chuck? That damn near ruins his reviews for me. He sounds more like a Lance or a Rick... possibly an Obadiah but Chuck? Naaaaaaaaaah. I don't feel it.

Haven't seen the review yet, but I must say, GEN for me is the worst Star Trek film out there.

Yes, worse than INS or NEM. INS is, at the very least, inconsequential, and NEM is good in the first two acts. GEN is completely devoid of anything interesting to say or do.

I mean, when the highlight of the movie is Kirk cooking eggs... Something is seriously wrong.

SFDebris hits on this film's weakness near the beginning of the review, and that is that it is a mess, with too many things being forced in.

Data's emotion chip, Kirk and Picard meeting each other, the Enterprise B, the destruction of the Enterprise D, the "two" deaths of Kirk, the Nexus, Picard's brother and nephew burning to death, two villains in Soran and the Duras sisters. There is just too much going on in one movie, and this means that Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga just gave themselves too much to do, and the plot suffered.

Not all Moore or Braga's fault.

Remember, Stewart and Spiner had it written into their movie contracts that both their characters would have significant personal story arcs in EVERY TNG Movie. That's why you get Picard & Data as the stars of the Movie Series, and this:
Gen - Picard's family dying / Data's emotion chip
FC - Picard vs the Borg / Data being tempted by the Queen
Ins - Picard's moral dilemma and love story / Data going renegade
Nem - Picard Clone / B-4

Of course, with Picard being the star, perhaps some of his would've been included anyway, but it was Spiner's greed (or, to be fairer, his business acumen at getting a good contractual deal) that ensured some Data nonsense had to be shoehorned into the plot.

Remember how writers would always make other starfleet captains appear incompetent and lacking so it would make the leading characters appear more dignified and capable? This review pretty much just revealed the fact that Picard was a victim of this in Star Trek Generations.

In the opening, Kirk sacrifices himself by saving the Enterprise B. Later on, Picard pretty much fails miserably to defeat Soran and this causes the sun to explode and kill every TNG character.

I especially love it when he comments on Picard asking GUINAN TO HELP HIM FIGHT SORAN. Ever wonder why the Enterprise was kept out of the Dominion War? Heck, I now believe that the admiral in First Contact kept Picard out of the Borg fight for this very reason. Our flagship of the entire Federation fleet was no match against an old, defective Bird of Prey and you asked Guinan to come back with you to fist fight Soran. Yeah, you're not coming to the Borg battle.

Braga: Kirk gets shot in the back by some random bad guy.
Fan: Doesn't that seem a little odd guys?
Braga: Well, I'd have him use a lightsaber, but he's not a Vulcan.

Moore: Did that death suck?
Fan: YES!
Moore: Great! That's what we were going for!

I can actually believe Ron Moore would say something like that.

Indeed, don't get me wrong, I wasn't placing blame on Moore and Braga, I was simply stating that the two of them gave themselves too much to do. The Picard and Data storylines would have been fine on their own, with more development (perhaps a little less comedy and more sentiment on the Data issue). It would have been fine to have just the one villain (Soran), no need for Kirk in the movie at all (unless their was some contractual reason for this as well?), no need for destroying the Enterprise D, and maybe even keep the Nexus as a mystery, Soran is trying to reach this paradise, but we do not get to see what it is like inside? Just some thoughts.

I had figured that, by now, everything that can be said about Generations has already been said. Why bother coming up with these reviews so late in the game when there's nothing new that can be contributed?

To act as a refresher perhaps? To better understand why the movie didn't work to those who are coming in late to the game? Just because it's already been said doesn't mean everyone knows about it.

He's doing all the Trek movies, so he needs to do it.

I'd actually like to see one of these reviews where the reviewer thinks Generations is a near-masterpiece.

Only in the soundtrack reviews.

Plus, I cannot wait to hear what he'll have to say about Trek09. He already made hints in this Generations review on what bothers him about it, so that's the one I'm looking forward to.

I couldn't get past the first part. He's not very funny and the singing was very annoying.

Yeah... this.
Hey, if Data gets to sing, he gets to sing. At least we don't get to "SEE" SFdebris sing.

If you want to get to where the real issues are in his review, watch parts 3-4 instead of 1-2. That covers all the major territories that brought the story of Generations down to a grinding catastrophe, and no singing.

This guy just shouldn't be doing reviews. He talks too fast, is far too wordy, makes worse jokes than Data and has a terrible speaking voice.

^^^I have to agree. I can barely follow him at all. What happens is that I get engrossed in the visuals and his voice just becomes a background monotone. He tries to cram too many adjectives in, or something, and I lose whatever point he's trying to make.
