SF Lit Author John Scalzi Picks Best Trek Movie Directors

What's wrong with the Enterprise-E bridge?

Just my own opinion, but simply from an aesthetics view, it looks like they adopted Cardassian designs for it... dark colors, sharp angles + curved corners and paint, brown and gray everywhere. It was almost like the anti-Trek bridge, especially when compared to the wide and open (the Generations bridge) or the sleek and bright (Voyager bridge).

Even the Defiant bridge, which is specifically and decidedly more military than all the other hero ships, had a less harsh bridge than the diplomatic-minded E-E.

I look at the E-E's bridge now and I think it's actually dated faster than the Refit-E or E-A bridge because of such sharp features, which are almost a quintessentially 90s design, especially the helm & ops consoles in the front. Of course, that's just my opinion.

I can't really say much on functionality of the bridge as that's not my specialty. I'll leave that up to finer minds to discuss.

I haven't seen FC or INS recently, but I saw Nemesis recently (and enjoyed it, so there), and I thought it was a nice looking bridge. I'd say my favourite is the E-A from TFF, but they're all good compared to XI, which just seems ridiculous. Not quite as bad as the engine room, but still.

I don't think the E-E's bridge has dated badly, but it's not that distinctive. The earlier bride designs are more spaced out, you get a better sense of where everyone is and in what way console A is different from console B. E-E just seems to be a jumble of consoles thrown about the room by contrast. The colour and lighting is fine, but it's a little too samey for my tastes.

I'm sure the new bridge would have made a better impression without the LENS FLARE!, but generally I was fine with it.

I mentioned the E-E bridge as looking like it was designed by Cardassians, and you have a Cardassian for an avatar. Of course you'd like it! :)

I won't comment on the XI engineering room, as I've seen wildly differing opinions on it (Navy personnel feel it's more realistic, while your standard Trekkie hates it. Me? again, no comment :) ).

But with the E-E engineering room, it looked less busy than the E-D engineering set for some reason. All I can remember is a large room with a warp core on the E-E (Nemesis has a couple good shots of the set's height), but the E-D had stations everywhere, functional elevators, and several decks to deal with their large core. I suppose all the set design money went elsewhere.
