SF/F Books: Chapter Two - What Are You Reading?

Inside Straight ed. by George RR Martin, a Wild Cards novel. In 1947 an alien ship crashes into Manhattan Bay and releases a bioweapon that overwrites DNA. 90% of the infected die horribly but the other 10% get the Wild Card-either Aces(read superhero abilities) or Jokers(livable deformities). The series the novel is based on traces the realistic effects of this situation through modern history and how it distorts the world we know. The novel is about a game show in 2007 called American Hero, produced by Rick Berman,(who they portray as a slimeball!) that catches the public attention ala American Idol. Great book so far!

^Wow, I thought the Wildcard series ended years ago. I have like the first 12 - 15 books. When did they start writing new ones?

In the middle of re-reading Turn Coat by Jim Butcher, in preparation for the next book, Changes, which comes out in a couple weeks.

I should do that, but I keep meaning to re-read the entire series... I guess I won't do it this year anyway so Turn Coat might just be my next book.

Scott Pilgrim Volume One: Precious Little Life to be followed by Scott Pilgrim Volume Two: The Infinite Sadness by Bryan O'Malley.

^Exactly why I wanted to read it. :) And if I were to list all the classics of literature that I haven't read and want to, you'd have to scroll down the post for half an hour!

Just finished reading Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together, and Scott Pilgrim Vs The Universe so I'm all caught up and am eagerly anticipating Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour in July! I highly recommend everyone read these...brilliant stuff. I'm currently flipping through Gary Russell's Torchwood Encyclopedia and am disappointed with the layout and length of entries so far.

Just started into Rise of Endymion, but Dan Simmons. Someone asked about the Hyperion Cantos in a Lost thread, and it forced me to re-read all four books of the series again. Great series!

^That is a great series, though I confess I preferred the Hyperion duology to the Endymion duology. I recently bought Ilium and Olympos, but haven't started reading them yet.

Different feel, I guess. Hyperion has a more epic feel, as well as a little mystery to go with the action, whereas Endymion goes more into playing with those worlds created in Hyperion, but trends more towards action than mystery. I enjoy Endymion more, but only because everything was so well put together in Hyperion (and elegently broken), so it's fun to go back through these things after the Fall and see what's become of them.

Ilium and Olympos are too long (could have dropped plenty of pages and still worked well), but enjoyable books. After a little while, though, I find I want the actual Trojan War crap skipped in favor of the future portion of the storyline, which I enjoy quite a bit. Another excellent series, though, Dan Simmons is one of my favorites. :)

A couple years ago I set out to do a Great Tolkien Read. I didn't last too long with it. So I'm trying again, and this time I swear it'll happen.

^^I've yet to read the Hyperion series but it's something that I've always wanted to read for a long time. I'm currently going through Batman and Robin Volume One: Batman Reborn By Grant Morrison and i'm about to start Star Trek Seven Deadly Sins.
