SF/F Books: Chapter Two - What Are You Reading?

I was looking at the pile of books, all fiction, that I need to read for school this summer (I hate the idea of taking school in the summer) and realized that if I was going to be able to pick any one of them up on short notice and have it finished for class on time, I'm not going to be able to work through a long series with books that are close to 1,000 pages. So unfortunately (and quite reluctantly) I have to put down The Waste Lands when I'm over halfway through. I could have finished it, but I know that if it's not going to be until August when I can get back to the Dark Tower series, I'm going to have to reread the books I've done already. It all sucks.

But to alleviate the pain I'm going to have the opportunity to catch up on some, shorter single titles that I've wanted to read. Like Frank Herbert's The Dragon In The Sea (I got it from the library so it gets priority because it has to be returned).

With Raymond Benson's embarassingly poor James Bond vs. The Union Trilogy finished and back on the shelf, I've started another Stephen R. Lawhead gem, the historical fiction/fantasy telling of the life of St. Patrick, appropriately titled, Patrick. I've been patiently saving this one for several months. 50 pages in and I'm quite pleased.

Currently in the middle of the "Chronicles of Amber" series by Roger Zalazny.

If you've never read it-you are soooo lucky! You get to go to Amber for the first time! I envy you!

...and me! I remember how psyched I was when I found the 2nd book in a library and realized it was a series... :D

...just finished [finally] reading Jack Finney's Time and Again, the sequel to Time After Time. Now back to my old project of finishing a Covenant re-read, just started The One Tree.

I'm on The Hand of Oberon at the moment. They aren't very big and the language is easy so I've gone through the last few in just an evening or two each. My friend lent them to me a long time ago and has finally asked for them back so I of course had to start reading them before I do.

So far I find the story entertaining, but the characters aren't quite up to what I like in my fiction these days(nothing measures up next to ASoIF though). The concept of the 'shadowverse' is probably the best thing it has going for it and he does take a few steps away from the fantasy cliches that I do appreciate. It definitely has the feel of some of the cheezier 70s sci-fi/fantasy though, and it took me a while to get over that.

I should probably finish the 'Corwin cycle' this weekend and I'll give a full review then. My friend doesn't have the second series, so I might have to find one of the compilations one of these days.

I finished Mort and just started Guards! Guards! I have to admit that I'm liking the City Watch a lot better than the Death series, although both are pretty funny.

I think the two threads are some of the best in Discworld. Have you read book 4? The Hollywood spoof?

I haven't read them yet, I also picked up the first Rincewind book The Color of Magic and Reaper Man. When I get done with those, I'm going to read more of the City Watch.

SFF books I've read since I last checked in:

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. A great book. It was interesting to see the differences between the book and Blade Runner (an excellent film, even though it deviates quite significantly from the book).

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. An incredible book, an incredible work of art. The chapter where Captain Beatty explains how the current state of affairs came about is a really stunning piece of writing.

Foundation by Isaac Asimov. The central premise is so interesting that the book is a compelling read, even though there's not much in the way of characterization and much of it is just extended exposition through long conversations.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. A challenging, shocking book. It's amazing that it was first published in 1932. It'll be interesting to see what Ridley Scott does with it if his film adaptation eventually gets off the ground.

Doing a warp speed re-read of Star Trek: Vanguard--Harbinger (I want to re-read the first three books before getting the fourth) before the first of my novels for school has to be read.

Finished White Gold Wielder last night, in my restarted re-read of the first two Thomas Covenant series... I'm going to re-read the 2 new ones now [Runes of the Earth and Fatal Revenant] since I'd not read the trilogies in about 20 years when they came out and felt a bit lost in places.

I really liked the First and Second Chronicles a lot this time around... Donaldson may be an acquired taste but nobody does things the way he does, for good or ill lol. Covenant may be an asshole but The Land is still one of the great "secondary creations" in all of fantasy... only Middle-Earth and Amber are in the same league IMHO.

...and I have the new Vanguard book too, that'll probably be sherbet between courses of SRD. :D

I finished Greater Than The Sum last night. I enjoyed it more than I expected. Star Trek novels haven't particularly been grabbing me lately.
I've also been reading Dancing on the Head of a Pin, the second Remy Chandler novel. I'm about half way through now, and I'm liking it, but I wouldn't say it stands out as fantastic.
