How are we defining summer? For example (in the Northern hemisphere), the meteorological convention defines summer as comprising the months of June, July, and August, but sometimes astronomical summer is defined as starting at the solstice, often identified with June 21 and by solar reckoning, summer instead starts on around May, ends around August 7 and the summer solstice is Midsummer. Then there's the whole "Memorial Day to Labor Day" definition for when to wear white bucks and seersucker.

I ask because (for example) Star Wars is often (along with Jaws), is considered the beginning of the Summer Blockbuster tradition, but it came out in May, shortly before Memorial Day and approximately a full month before the solstice.

Orac, thanks for creating two of the creepiest avatars. It took me a moment to figure out that was ET and my mind just registered a horrifically disfigured man screaming and screaming. As for The Omen, what a classic movie--but that was the scene that haunted my dreams as a young child. I snuck out of my bedroom when my parents had friends over to watch the broadcast premier of that movie just in time to see a man decapitated.
