I think this is a very interesting choice. That scene kind of freaked me out, too, and I was an adult when I saw it.

The Nuclear Nightmare scenes from Terminator 2 are, scarily, extremely accurate to how a nuclear explosion would affect a city. The Military advisors of the film spent several weeks with Jim Cameron and the Production Team designing those scenes.
Side note: there were two versions of that scene shot and each took over two months to prepare both shots (four plus months total).
