I figure STXI will show young Jim fall in love for the first time and with Carol Marcus but the failure of that relationship makes it all but impossible for him to really commit afterward. Until Edith Keeler, that is and then that goes south and he's all scarred emotionally again.

It's been confirmed that Carol Marcus was in an earlier draft of the script but eventually dropped. Whoever Kirk's love interest is going to be, it won't be her this time.
