Sex vs violence

I was over at Amazon looking at the reviews for Midsomer Murders and was rather amused at the comments made one man which included

I am not sure why they have to push their agenda of immorality,adultery and homosexuality on people. Every episode had something to do along those lines.

and

Only watched 2 and skimmed the others hoping for something with true murder mystery material it was not found in any of these films.

From these statements I gather that the man wasn't offended by people being murdered in various ways but was offended by the amount of sex in Midsomer Murders - despite the fact that MM is rather tame. I am hard-pressed to actually recall an episode in which homosexuality was portrayed - I have no doubt there were such episodes but none immediately come to mind.

Do you think there is something wrong with the mindset of this man? Are you more upset by sex being portrayed on TV than violence or vice versa?

i suspect this nonce is one of those looney Christians you find in the States who thinks anything sexual is disgusting. sex and violence are alright as long as it's in context and not gratuitous or OTT.

One of the most amusing reviews I have come across at Amazon is by a man who complained that in "Life of Mammals" David Attenborough was forcing evolution down the reviewer's and the reviewer's children's throats. The guy admitted to looking at all 4 disks of the series.

I've come across a lot of people like him. Personally, I am far more bothered by violence than by sex (assuming it's consensual and not violent).

That said, I do enjoy a good murder mystery! But I read them, not watch them. W/ a book, I can control how graphically I imagine the violence.

I like both reading and watching murder mysteries. At the moment I am mainly reading Scandanavian murder mysteries and really enjoying them.

Yes, this attitude pops up a lot, sadly. Many people really seem to think that sex is taboo where violence is acceptable. Not just in art, in reality also.

Then again, I can't stand violence. At all.

There are many grotesque extremes of sex and violence out there for all to see on the internet, but complaining about Midsomer Murders? The minute phrases like "homosexual agenda" come up, I know to stop paying attention.

Sex and violence can be portrayed in so many different manners that making a blanket statement saying one or the other is somehow worse is utterly pointless. You might as well ask "which is worse - food or drink?"

I personally find sexual violence on TV and film uncomfortable viewing - but that's the point.

I feel like so many here in America are way too prude. A little sex and nudity is not nearly as bad as violence is.

We can show footage of the towers falling on TV, but not Janet's boob? Please!

I'm not a huge fan of viewing graphic examples of either in my entertainment, though not for moral reasons. I just don't find it all that aesthetically pleasing. That said, I don't have any problems with it either and I do think there is something wrong with the mindset that objects so strongly to representations of sex and not at all to similarly extreme portrayals of violence.

And yeah, "homosexual agenda" pretty much throws all credibility right out the window.

I bet this guy would also complain about the "homosexual agenda" and other gratuitous sex shown on Taggart and not say a word about the very graphic violence on that show. I love a good murder mystery but Taggart is only show of this genre I stopped watching because it was too graphic.

I'm somewhat amused that someone who puts so much stock in morality in their entertainment (and whose morality that is, I leave as an exercise for the reader) likes to watch murder mysteries in the first place. Murder is probably the least moral activity there is.

And Ghu forbid that storytelling art, whether literary or visual, depict society as it actually exists, with a variety of people with all sorts of characteristics. Everyone in books, TV and movies should be white, male, hetero and between the ages of 35 and 49, I guess.

As for murder mysteries I like good ones that focus on the logic behind finding the killer(s) rather than the ones that focus on the violent act itself.
