Yeah I gotta agree, watched it a lot when it was in reruns on Swedish TV about ten years back. Awesome stuff, see it!

^^ Since I've already sent you after The Three Stooges, I guess I have no choice. :D

Well, my Mother always liked it, so that's usually a big red flag. :rommie:

^ Just because she's your mom doesn't mean she can't have good taste!

Sadly, Betty White is the only one of them left now. :(

Really? I knew some of them were gone, but not all but one. This news makes me sad, since my mom and grandma (her mom) liked to watch Golden Girls and both of them have been dead for years.

    Out there. Thatta way.
I'm honestly more bugged by music. Every female artist has to be supermodel hot. So whenever I turn on the radio I get stuck listening to crap like Lady Ga Ga (dumbest name in the history of pseudonyms, by the way) rather than some woman with real talent who isn't that good looking (not that I find the aforementioned individual particularly good looking, I can't get past the awful music and stupid behavior to even make that call).

Think about it, IT'S MUSIC you never even have to look at the singer. I'd bet $20 that out there, there's a woman with an album better than Thriller, but she's fat, so can't get any airtime outside of an occasional bar gig.

I'm not a feminist, I just hate being delivered inferior product.

^^ MTV changed all that 30 years ago. I don't know why you wouldn't believe in Equal Rights, though.

In my Mother's case, it's usually a good bet. :rommie:

    What's a 'masculine job'?

I don't think so. We've got lots of data on collective male behaviour, and none of it is pretty. Males bond by collectively indulging their competitive, violent and predatory drives. And the larger and more unmediated (by female influence) that group is, the uglier it gets. At the extreme, you get the rape of Nanking.

An all-female society would miss male aggression and competition - or rather, miss its civilised derivatives: research, experimentation, innovation, exploration etc; men are always the first to do X - but it would fare far better than an all-male society.

The differences arose from the fundamental reproductive qualities attendant to the sexes: the male can impregnate as many females as he can lay hands on, and competes with other males for the privilege. The female's reproductive capacity is fixed; limited not by the availability of mates but by her own body. She does not compete with other females in the way that males compete with each other. Further, the debilitations of pregnancy and the rigours of raising offspring engender dependency in the female, thereby encouraging the formation of social networks.

^People love to talk about the differences between the sexes, but the differences between individuals are far greater. Honestly I think all this talk of men being better at directions and women being better at landmarks, and men having higher spacial IQ's and women having higher verbal IQ's, and so on and so forth, while interesting on the surface, doesn't actually say much of not about humanity -- thus I disagree that one could draw such sweeping conclusions about the supposed fitness/function of all female or all male societies by referencing grandly generalized gender differences.
I agree with everything you said, except the feminist bit. Remember, feminism is about equality for women, and nothing else. Crazy militant man-haters are decidedly not feminists.

RJ, The Golden Girls was decades ahead of its time! On rare occasion it suffered from the '80's sitcom tropes of the Very Special Episode or the clip show, but overall it's still cleverer, raunchier, more intelligent, and more liberal than about anything on TV today.

Of course. None of this is relevant to any given individual; it's only at the population level that such patterns are observable and meaningful. And maybe that level isn't very human; it's certainly an artificial perspective, but then a great many of the problems we face today arise largely or entirely because of our limited, 'human' perspective: we wouldn't allow a friend to remain homeless, but that nameless guy we passed on the street? Sure.

I don't know of any woman who has actually borne 2.1 children either. ;)

    Point taken. :)

I'm just so used to having to beat my dad over the head with the Anti Generalization Stick screaming THE VARIANCE BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS IS GREATER THAN THE VARIANCE BETWEEN THE SEXES that I sometimes forget there are reasonable people in the world.

I'm a proud feminist. As a man, it makes me sad that other men don't even know what a feminist is.

Sociology textbook definition: "The Feminist Perspective" The belief that the problems in social, political, and economic aspects of society arise from the inequality of the genders.

Practical definition: 'Feminism' Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.

Feminism isn't female superiority. It's equality.

    National Organization for Women

Know who else are Feminists? These guys National Coalition for Men

Wait, the NCFM is feminist? Sure, they support equality for the sexes.

I believe it, especially after seeing Susan Harris's name on it; I'll check it out when I get a chance.

Not to disagree with you, but what do you call the women who constantly harp on how we men are holding them back simply because they're women? I've met one or two women over the years who do this and don't seem to know the difference either.

Yeah. I don't get when it became cool to go around being like, "oh, p.s., I'm not a feminist." People who say this are either complaining, are honestly bad people, don't know what they're talking about, or think they're so more "postmodern" than the world around them. Acting is if we've achieved gender equality is an absolute joke. As such, I won't drop my feminist flag.

RandyS, you have met one or two "radical feminists" out of how many dozens and dozens of liberals with stronger, more realistic goals for women. These crazies happen, unfortunately, but people far overstate their numbers, influence, or support; people constantly harp on the small, radical fringe and use them as an excuse to trash and then ultimately reject the entire field.

The DVD seasons were going for like $12 apiece last week!

And I will gladly add my voice to the chorus of praise for The Golden Girls. Beyond the nostalgia and fond memories I have of watching it with my parents, it's simply a top-notch, superbly written and performed show. And it's part of the Susan Harris universe along with Empty Nest and Nurses too!

Just don't bring up the Ron Moore/JJ Abrams reboot. It's pretty much the same, except Dorothy's a man and the writing isn't as witty. :(

i believe all people are created equal and equally capable.

i also believe both genders are equally capable of being horndogs. i just can't find a woman who wants to be a horndog with me. :(

mind you, lack of fucking money don't help...

Money helps, but you don't really need it to bang a lot of girls. It's a state of mind, not a state of possessions.
