...but on the other hand if they ever do "Spock's Brain" they'll really commit to it.
Seinfeld is a thing in their universe, and Seinfeld did an entire episode centred around TWOK.I just want to know if Star Trek is a thing in their universe.
The version I heard years ago was that Freiberger nixed Coon's original version, on the premise that "Star Trek isn't a comedy." Not sure if apocryphal, though it's true there were no (purposely) comedic episodes in the third season, following several in the second.Wasn't "Spock's Brain" supposed to be more of a light-hearted episode when Gene Coon originally pitched it?
Cuz brain-ectomies are so funny!
That was incredibly funny, but part of what made it funny was that it was being done by a robot having trouble understanding the difficult concept of humor. Also, it wasn't the premise of the whole episode, it was just a subplot.Look at the laughs they got out of a severed leg prank.

In fairness, Steve Martin succeeded with brain-ectomies in The Man with Two Brains, but that's Steve Martin.Well, the attempt to portray the idea as dramatic was an unintentionally funny failure. The idea as presented is essentially absurd, so comedy is the only real option.
They are if you're Count Olaf performing one on a Baudelaire orphan.Cuz brain-ectomies are so funny!
So we just need for The Orville to reference the 2009 movie and we'll have Star Trek Inception! The Beastie Boys are a thing in Star Trek, and their song "Intergalactic" includes the line "Like a pinch on the neck from Mr. Spock".
I am losing track of the Fox buyout and who owns what...but wouldn't this be back by DISNEY demand
Although, on a related note none of the new characters being added in the second season were included. And Alara is still featured....
