News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

A concern about this social credit system is how it will be used by individuals during disputes. Will there be a process in place to weed out the actual infractions from the spurious infractions?

^ I think that was kind of the point. That if left to social whims, everything would eventually spiral out of control. That's the kind of danger they wanted to show in this episode, in how we rely so much on social media.

I like Orville's take on that idea that was also done by Community and Black Mirror, but one thing I feel none of those episodes touched on is how systems like this are manipulated by the wealthy and powerful. Community kind of did it with the fives having the power to decide who becomes fives, but mostly they focused on the system forcing individual people to market themselves. They didn't focus on the even more dangerous stuff going on right now on Facebook with people building psychological profiles of people they use to manipulate them into hating each other to get their votes.

And none of that is as scary as a government like China using it to punish people who express sentiments they disagree with. Only thing worse than social media power dictated by the majority is social media power dictated by the one.

I see the Saturn Awards love, drama! The "Orville" vs "Discovery" debate has just go some extra juice.

I wonder if Expanse’s initial cancellation influenced the award decision which was finalized before it was picked up again by Amazon maybe?
