Maybe it's because you've seen ST opening credits about 700 times more than The Orville's?
If I wrote down the name of every episode from season one of "Family Guy", taped them to a wall and used dart and through it without aiming, any episode I hit with the dart is about fifty times better than the pilot "Old Wounds".

He must be the only engineer in Starfleet (sorry, the Union) who doesn't go to engineering.
It's the second episode, and like early TNG, I guess it's treating the Chief Engineer as an unnecessary position (for whatever idiotic reason). I can't find any reference other than Wikipedia about Steve Newton's job (I am positive the character's name is Steve Newton, due to that name being present on many official cast lists on other sites), but I do know that Larry Joe Campbell has retweeted the fact that he is playing the Chief Engineer, and his character is probably an engineer based on uniform (Orange for engineering/ship services, plus the engineering/gear logo on his chest, the same logo worn by Molloy and Lamarr).
Nothing is set in stone, and MacFarlane has tweeted the possibility of a future jovial engineer (in the vein of Scotty?), suggesting that Newton will either be shown to be far more interesting in the future, or he will be replaced in short order. Isaac has been described as a "Science and Engineering Officer". He's clearly a Data analogue, which always had a weird position on the Enterprise-D. My guess is he's a liaison to the engineering department and will be the go-to guy for spatial anomalies due to his Kaylon heritage as someone who knows more than the Planetary Unionists.
Newton was the main voice who spoke up when they rerouted power from the engines, something I'd expect of the chief engineer and really none of the business of the chief shuttlebay officer. And I just realized a possible joke naming connection between the names of Isaac and Newton, suggesting that these two will likely work together and perhaps butt heads in the future. Isaac is the one who suggested diverting the power that Newton was against, I'd be surprised if there isn't a confrontation next episode even.
She's a Ganondorf! My impression is that Moclans are males genetically engineered to reproduce asexually, due to either a genetic disease or government requirement that female Moclans can no longer (easily) exist. We'll get an explanation soon enough.
Ah, could maybe Newton be the first to bite it?
We have to have a redshirt somewhere. I mean, it would ruin the comedy of the first episode, and destroy Kitan's psyche in the second episode, but it's such a staple of sci-fi, and a "realistic" take on the future has to acknowledge death in some manner at some point. Plus, Newton was shown to be a bit of a condescending jerk in his two short scenes, so obviously he's in prime position to bite the big one without the audience getting too depressed over it.
As a huge Red Dwarf fan, I couldn't agree more. Totally different kinds of shows, but just as much fun.
It would be hilarious if we had the Andromeda Ascendant as the Heavy Cruiser, and make this show a riff on even more than TNG
The epilogue was set up so that it COULD be several days later..that is what i am presuming..
RE: 21 days on the egg... I don't see a problem with the time line. The ship sat for who knows how long doing repairs, and then was ordered back to Earth. They didn't turn around right away, perhaps a couple days. And we have no idea how far it was to the forbidden territory, nor how long after the rescue before the egg hatched. The 21 days can easily be accounted for.
There's an awful lot of contemporary references in this for a show set four hundred years in the future. They should have left it at Kermit. I'm sure Kermit will continue to be an icon.
That was a nice homage to "The Menagerie" (and apparently that Roddy McDowall episode of Twilight Zone) and had a lot of cool aliens-- the aliens are definitely better than most latter-day Trek. I liked how the captain and first officer were reminded of their chemistry, but then quickly reminded of how much they annoy each other. But the ending seemed unclear-- did they save everybody or just the kid?
A lot of the humor still falls flat. It's still like they're forcing it in there because that's how they sold the concept. And, boy, these people drink and get stoned a lot on duty.
And the ending-- "It's a girl"-- reminded me of Rabbit Test.
