News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

The uniforms are what look cheap, to me. And the ship design looks like the pass the producers give right before the final design.

If I can get online tomorrow, since I'm in a tropical storm zone from Irma, I'll see if I can catch it.
 
They released a new 360 behind the scenes video. Although it's not really much of a 360 video, it's just a still image of the Orville bridge with the clip playing on the screen. It's definitely worth checking out.

The clip about the ship, and a second one about John Favreau actually were cut from this.
 
Some of it looks cheap, but moreover, it looks like somebody is parodying Berman era Star Trek. It's not even nostalgic, it's plain derivative.

This aesthetic were make sense if it were a comedy, it makes absolutely no sense for a new adventure show released in 2017. That's not how you reclaim optimism for sci-fi, flat out blatantly trying to look like optimistic Star Trek. You do your own thing with the spirit of optimistic Star Trek.
 
So far it seems like they took a lot of the playful hypotheticals from TrekBBS and put them on screen, then gave all the characters the social irreverence of Family Guy characters only without the dirtiness.

Ten minutes in it still feels an awful lot like a comedy. Not the 'joke after joke' style of comedy McFarlane is known for, so much as sitcom style humor where there are dramatic storylines whose tension is undercut by humor. Characters more interested in their drink privileges than the awe of space travel.
 
OK...skipping pages 27-30..

So in 1st 10 minutes, so far, OK... nice TOS reference ...that Seth didn't qualify for a Heavy Cruiser (the ENterprise's class, for the detailed nerd)

Only 1 penis joke, and the adultery was not explicit...so we'll see if my kids can watch
 
This show feels like such a weird TNG clone. Even the soundtrack sounds like it's from TNG.
 
Gordon is such a jerk.

And ads for Ghosted are annoying.

I am enjoying this show so far.

But yeah, it's definitely a comedy. I don't care what the creators said. The main character made a series of sarcastic quips when a wondrous, dangerous new technology is presented. It's a comedy.

It's either a good scifi comedy or a terrible scifi drama. I choose a good scifi comedy.

Or rather, it's in this weird space in between where to half the characters it's a comedy and to the other half it's a serious drama.

It's not on here for another couple hours, but so far I'm liking what I'm hearing from you guys.
 
Well, I was going to tune in at 7:00, but the show was preempted by the news. I assumed that was because of the hurricane. Nope. Packers coverage. Nice to see they have their priorities in order at the Milwaukee Fox affiliate. I guess I'll have to wait until 11:05 PM.

It's not funny enough to be a good comedy. The jokes are there, but in and out. It's about as much a comedy as Iron Man or Doctor Strange.
 
The show is a lot of fun, but characters' attitudes don't match up with their situation, so while the show is enjoyable because it's funny and nostalgic it will be impossible to really get emotionally drawn in if they try to do real dramatic moments.
