News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

After seeing the trailer, I now think orange might actually be flight personnel, at least the two wearing orange are at the stations which on Star Trek would be helm and navigation.
The orange peoples' insignia have gears in them. Gears, get it? ;)

Gears sound like engineering.*

* - I have no idea what orange means.

You know what I just thought. What if this show beats "Discovery" to the punch by having the first gay trek character. I'm not sure which show will air first. A few other thoughts.
In the "Discovery" forum I asked if the crew should do weed. Who bets we see drug humor or maybe even commentary on it because we know Macfarlane is a big advocate of legal weed.
Am I the only one who thinks we might see a big Ds9 vs Babylon 5 rivary between the shows? Making things even more intresting I think it might be possible for this to even surpass Trek on dealing with social issue's because you can sometimes get away with more when you use humor. It will be intresting to see what they say about Trump. Maybe Patrick Stewart could even play a Trump style character. DIdn't he say he wanted to become a American citizen in part to stand up against him?

I'm curious how many other Star Trek alumni we'll see in this show.

McFarlane is a sci-fi fan so I can see this being done with great detail to the genre whilst also poking fun at it. Any word on release over here in the UK?

I can see it now...

They visit a new, more modern ship full of lens-flare generating ultrabright lights, crewed by hyperactive twentysomethings fresh out of the academy.

They visit a planet where their adventures have been made into a TV show, and attend an Orville convention (writer and TrekBBS member David A Goodman already did something similar in his "autobiography" of Kirk)

Offhand comments about how travel across the galaxy feels like it takes weeks sometimes, but other times just minutes.

Inevitable mirror universe episode featuring goatees and lesbians.

Arguments about whether previous events actually happened or not.

An ultra-meta episode about the 42 minute reset.

Patrick Stewart.

This thing writes itself.

With a new Trek on its way and Seth McFarlane doing a very Galaxy Quest feel/look show, all I need now is to hear that Firefly and FarScape are coming back and 2017 will be the most wonderful of years!

Burning question - is the ship named after Orville Wright or Orville Redenbacher? It's MacFarlane we're talking about here - could go either way...

All I think of is a big green duck!

Since this keeps Palicki from returning to Agents of SHIELD...no.

I doubt they would have had the option anyway, the way they wrote both Bobbi and Hunter out was pretty final. I could see them being brought back for an episode or 2 if they happened to run into them on a mission but there is zero chance of either character returning as full time SHIELD Agents without causing some serious problems.

Seeming fans have been talking about it for so long it would actually be pretty ironic if they were beaten to it. Both shows currently say "coming fall 2017" so Discovery could still come out first.

As for the drug thing, I never commented on your original thread but while I can't see it in a Star Trek show as it doesn't seem to fit where GR thought of humanity being. There's also the International angle to consider as there are a number of countries where its not just illegal with debates about it but is very much banned which could hurt audience figures.

I can however possibly see it coming up on a show like this even if it is an analogy with some alien plant. It really depends on how Fox feel about possibly alienating portions of their audience as even in the US from what I've seen there are people who wouldn't want their kids exposed to that sort of thing even if we have seen hallucinogenic drugs more than hinted at during shows like The Simpsons and Futurama (my favourite was the whole "sandwich" gag in How I Met Your Mother). Complicated question and I think it really boils down to the Studio censor people.

I've been looking but nothing yet, there is a Fox channel on Virgin Media but it doesn't necessarily mean they will broadcast it there over here.

Having watched the trailer a few times, I admit, even with the broad humour (my tastes are a lot more dark) I rather enjoyed it and if it appears this side of the pond on Netflix or the like, I'll take a gander.

Sci Fi + Comedy = Galaxy Questish (it seems)

it's more than that. GQ was a satire on Star Trek. It featured a lot of the same elements that Trek has. It had a star ship, a crew that looked a lot of a Trek crew, even having a Kirk and a Spock like character. It featured a transporter malfunction, red shirts etc...

Patrick Stewart.
IMO, I suspect if they do get Patrick Stewart for this show, it'll likely be a voice role. Aside from Blunt Talk (in which Stewart is in fact the lead) Stewart's involvement in MacFarlane's productions is almost always voice roles. Even in MacFarlane's live action movies, Stewart only has voice roles, he's the narrator of the two Ted movies, and a talking sheep in A Million Ways to Die in the West.

That'd be amazing! A whole episode where all the characters suddenly sound like an eloquent old British man

Maybe so but I think Blunt Talk is evidence of Patrick Stewart's willingness to do the ridiculous. While it was just playful banter, he seemed open to appearing in Legion in some capacity during his appearance on James Corden with Dan Stevens. Plus, I'm sure he would enjoy mocking himself in person in a Star Trek capacity.
