Series Six To Start On 12th March?

According to this website* Peter Hoar is to direct a one-off episode of DW by Moffat to air at Easter next year. Given that the only episode of Series 6 that hasn't been shot/isn't currently shooting is the "game-changing" Episode 7, counting back from Easter gives us 12th of March as the start date.

EDIT: And now it'd been changed to just directing an episode to broadcast sometime in 2011...

It says a one off special, and also indicates its an hour long, so doesn't this imply an Easter special? And the series might start after it rather than before it I guess?

All stories are "one-offs" except the two-parters and Series Finales tend to be longer than regular episodes.

So now this year Matt Smith is playing both Santa AND the Easter Bunny?

The guy changed his CV to just say he's directing a regular episode. So no story here.

The official word is DW is still going to start at Easter. The thing is Easter I believe falls later than usual in 2011 so a lot depends on things like what might happen during those 6 or 7 weeks that could distract the BBC from DW. Then again, the World Cup was supposed to cause all sorts of havoc for DW according to earlier media reports (the split season was actually expected for this year as a result) but nothing happened.

Easter 2011 is April 24. Assuming that Doctor Who premieres Easter Saturday, April 23, the midseason finale would be June 4. Presumably the second half would begin in September to fit with the claims of a fall return and no more than three months without Doctor Who.
