Series Bible

A good bad influence

I hope one of you guys can help me out on this. I tried using the search function, but can't find exactly what I'm looking for. So I'm asking here:

Is there a place online where I can read the original series bible for The Next Generation? Or does anyone of you have it in your possession in digital form? I'd love to read about the original character concepts and biographies.

Many thanks in advance! :)

Thanks for posting, Pseudo!

I'm on page 10 now, and it's interesting that Roddenberry believed that "many reputable scientists" acknowledged the possibility of telepathy, so Troi was OK, but no one could pitch a story about "mysterious psychic powers."

Having gotten further down that list, I thought of a fun drinking game: take a shot each time the episode violates one of the roles that Roddenberry insist they not violate ("no melodrama," no "plots involving a whole civilization," no "mad scientists")

Seriously! Great link, which I enjoyed reading a lot. I've read bits of it before, but never the whole thing. Very enjoyable, and it's nice to have some new TNG material to read! :)

You're not going to believe this, but I had the EXACT same thought about a drinking game while reading that list.

Great minds, etc, etc, etc... :D

P. 25--""Data has needs not unlike that of a female crewperson--in other words, Data needs very much to be needed."

 with a touch of :wtf:

All saved to my hard drive! Thanks!

They also have the Deep Space Nine and Voyager writers' bible.

I picked up a Xerox'd copy of that back in the 80s at a con. Cool. But what was GR thinking...???

He speaks of TOS as NOT a "star and co-star" series but more of a "family ensemble." Really??

Seems to me TOS pretty much IS a Kirk and Spock (and McCoy) series and then a supporting cast. NOT an ensemble piece.
Was he thinking of his original vision, or the first year?
Then after GR left, THEN it became the Kirk and Spock show?

How can GR claim TOS wasn't a "star and co-star" series when the opening credits list Shatner and Nimoy only?
Hindsight revisionism?

The original tech manual used by the series writers is also available out there...somewhere...online

I recall an interview with some TOS writers/producers claiming that Gene had always planned an ensemble series, but the popularity of certain characters, and the EGOs of the actors involved eventually changed this idea for TOS. Look closely at early episodes like Man Trap, Corbomite Maneuver, Shore Leave, etc...they involve the secondary characters more.

Pseudo, I bow before thee! This is amazing stuff that I never would have found on my own. Thanks heaps! I love the TrekBBS!:D

In regards to the Tasha/Wesley friendship -- I don't think I've seen a lot of first-season TNG episodes, so can anyone verify whether or not this made it into any first-season scripts?

Page 15: No scripts where technology breaks down to create a jeapordy. Is'nt half the holo-deck episodes just that way?

Aside from Tasha's little anti-drug speech in that episode with Merritt Butrick and Judson Scott, I don't think so.

The Tasha/Wesley friendship was a funny idea. I'm sure Wil Wheaton is sorry it never panned out, but, a woman in her mid-20s wanting to hang out with a 15-year-old boy? That's got some strange undertones.
