Series and Sonequa Martin Green Win Saturn Awards

"Why is Fucking cool" more crude than dumbass or double dumbass to you, or Hell, Son of a Bitch or Dam or Dammit Jim, or Shit or Bullshit or Freakasaurus or Ugly Bags of mostly Water or Spoonheads or Cardies or Troll?

Jason
Humor defies definition - it is either funny or it isn't. Fucking cool can be funny in the right context, however Tilly's line and timing were forced and, yes, cringey.

Congrats to STD.

I know JJ Abrams and the other guys on the Saturn committee really like the show. So more Saturn awards for the show are likely in the future.

That’s funny. It’s not often that literally everything in this post is wrong.

Because humour most certainly does have a definition (or three, depending on context), and the effect of its use is rather famously a completely subjective experience.

Of course there are definitions for everything. The definitions for humor are mostly useless because of its subjective nature, as you point out. Applying any definitions of humor most certainly will not ensure a laugh, hence my assertion that it defies definition - at least in any useful manner which one could use to assess one thing funny and another not.

Yeah...except you weren’t responding to a comment claiming it was objectively funny. You were responding to a comment asking how the content itself was any more crude than the other listed examples.

And no, the definitions isn’t ‘useless.’ Might as well say that the definition of ‘good’ is useless, because it doesn’t come with a ‘how to’ guide. For its intended use, its fine.

We shall agree to disagree.

Yes, it made it feel like there are actually real human beings speaking, and not just stilted cardboard cutouts of characters, IMO.

There's a distinct difference from being merely a stilted cardboard cutout, and being a "Professional" when on the bridge of a ship, You can still be life like and professional. Something the old writers could pull off. Bellana Tores was a great example of both disregard, and yet professionalism. Tilley's attitude is one that left me with she really doesn't care too much about professionalism and protocol. fine, but annoying having been in a Military family and seen first hand command decks with professionalism all the time at play. I think of that F-Bomb scene with Tilley, and transpose it with the opening of the Wrath of Khan and the Kobiashi Maru simulation. No, still think there's something lacking there.

IIRC, she was in the Spore Drive room with two fellow scientist who just saw something really cool. She also stops herself and starts to apologize realizing she might have crossed a line. So she obviously cares.

I'm will to bet there's more that a bit of salty language on the command deck of a military vessel that your family let on.

Issacs is the only who should have been even considered for a award.
I based my decision on the first half of the series. I never watched the latter half. Given the material provided, and I find it substandard, Issacs and Yeoh did a fine job. And it's "an award", not "a award".

The F-bomb scene with Tilly was not in a military command environment, but two researchers working hands on in a project setting. Having worked in both that sort of situation and in military offices at various times, I can attest that the way Tilly and Stamets express themselves is more plausible than most Trek dialogue.

Tilly is a Cadet. A student. And therefore not professional by definition.
Yes, Tilly is a cadet. That doesn't prevent her from stepping up and proving her worth. An ordinary person forced into extraordinary events can perform extraordinary acts. They just have to get out of their own way.

Yeah, it can get a bit salty. My dislike for the whole magic mushroom propulsion system aside, I've been in situations where your team hits upon a solution that is solid and sublime, and yes. Yes, someone is going to point out how "fucking cool" it really is. If you can't celebrate an achievement, what's the point of research?

As a student, I can confirm!
It's funny, the whole student thing. I've been a student of maritime history and marine archaeology for over twenty years now. I can't see a day where I won't be a student. There is always so much to learn. And what you think you know today will change tomorrow. Always be a student, all of your days.

It was poorly 'staged'. Like Discovery promised it was going to be different so wait for it... there will be homage to... profanity! No other profanity to show that it is commonplace just this one 'set up' moment. The three actors do their scene and then it gets... edgy. Oh yeah. Tilly says fucken cool or whatever. The other two pause, like because we need a big pointer to show this is the moment!!! Then Stamets echoes it.

I blushed and was so impressed  That was not good TV at all.
