Series 7 FINALLY Starts Shooting

The puzzle to me, in terms of merchandising, is the scaling back of the novel line in 2012. Yes, we're getting several high-profile books, but the abandonment of the NSA line (as far as we know) is a complete puzzle.
I suspect that Moffat didn't figure out what he was doing with season 7 in time for the books to fit between series 6 and 7 (or wasn't willing to tell Justin Richards). With the exception of the first batch in 2008, the books have done a pretty good job of keeping current with the show. If Rory & Amy aren't going to be in the show next year, I can see why BBC Books wouldn't have wanted to develop books featuring them.

From the Doctor's perspective, there's 200 years between The God Complex and The Wedding of River Song that could be ripe for novels to exploit. Not to mention the undiscolsed period of time between The Wedding of River and The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. True, he has no companions during this time, but we've had companion-less NSAs before.

In fact, the upcoming Eleventh Doctor "adult hardcover" Dark Horizons makes no mention to Amy and Rory so it seems they may be following this very idea.

Still, I guess you could be right that since they had no idea what was in store for season 7, they may not have wanted to step on Moffat's toes so to speak.

Not having studio space to film in between October and January - cos it was moving home - is also a pretty bloody big factor...
Actually it looks like they're still be using the studios at Upperboat. Mark Williams was spotted in The Upperboat Inn this afternoon while he was on a break from filming.
@_lizzybuff: just met mark Williams aka mr weasley! In the upperboat pub treforest with @helen_gurner!

@Ruther2: Was Mark Williams filming today when you saw him?

@_lizzybuff: yes he said he was on a break!
Which would explain why the Official Doctor Who Convention's set tours are taking place at Upperboat and not at Roath Lock.

Filming has just started on Series 7 of Doctor Who in Cardiff. This series will see the last days of the Ponds with Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill[ returning for their final, rollercoaster voyage with The Doctor. Amy and Rory have been at the Doctor's side for more than two series but what will he do after their heartbreaking departure?

On returning for his third series as the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith says: "It's thrilling and exciting to be back and working with two of my closest friends." Karen Gillan adds: "It's just brilliant to be back on the TARDIS with Matt and Arthur for our craziest adventures yet."

New guest stars so far confirmed to star will include:
David Bradley (Argus Filch in the Harry Potter movies);
Rupert Graves (Lestrade in Sherlock and alongside David Tennant in Single Father) and Mark Williams

Series 7 will then see a dramatic turn of events when The Doctor meets a new friend. Prepare yourselves for thrills, adventures and dramatic surprises as the show builds towards its enormous, climactic 50th anniversary year. Fourteen big, blockbuster-movie episodes - each a brand new epic adventure featuring new monsters and some familiar foes as you've never seen them before.

So confirmation in there that they are doing all stand-alone episodes.

featuring new monsters and some familiar foes as you've never seen them before.

The Doctor investigates the Dalek Babysitting Service.
In another episode, he teaches a poetry class with poems written by the Judoon.
And hilarity ensues when the Doctor travels to 1938 and runs across a group of Cybermen auditioning for the part in THE WIZARD OF OZ of the Tin Man.
And just why are the Ood operating a car wash in the US? Is it really "brushless" if they're just cleaning the cars with their faces? The Doctor wants to know.

:guffaw:

Awesome Signature, BTW

I'm just imagining the nursery rhymes...

"Rockabye Kaled Mutant on the tree top..."

"Hickory dickory dock, the Cybermat ran up the clock..."

So does this make Amy officially the longest (continuously) serving companion of the new series? I guess it does... right? Rose got two series, Martha got one series, Donna got one series, Mickey got a handful of episodes, Adam got one episode, River got a handful of episodes, Amy gets 2+ series... yeah?

According to IMDB:

Rose is currently up to 34 Episodes, including 7 episodes after her departure in Doomsday. Billie Piper is currently the Actor with the 2nd most episodes (David Tennant #1 has 48 Episodes, Matt Smith #3 has 31 episodes)

Amy is currently up to 30 Episodes, up to The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe. So, if Amy has 5 episodes in the next Series, she will bypasss Rose as the most appearing NuWho Companion.

Rory is up to 22 Episodes, Martha is up to 20.

Though Paul Casey (Ood Sigma) has been in 30 episodes as various Cybermen, Judoon, Slitheen, etc and Nicholas Briggs and Rauri Mears each have 21 episodes as various Daleks, Cybermen, Judoon, etc.

Amy didn't get the 2011 Christmas special, though - surely that interrupts "continuously serving", leaving her tied with Rose? :)

Incorrect, did you not watch it all the way until the end? The Widow insists the Doctor should go home for Christmas, and he shows up at Ammy and Rory's for Christmas Dinner.

Except that Amy and Rory are no longer traveling with the Doctor at that point. Their appearance in "The Doctor, the Widow, the Missing Oxford Comma, and the Wardrobe" is the equivalent of the Doctor visiting Martha in the fourth season or any of the appearances at the end of "The End of Time Part Two" -- they're guest stars, not ongoing characters. It's possible, even likely, that they have spent more time with the Doctor than Rose did (certainly, there's a lot we haven't seen, if only to account for the time that Amy's pregnancy would have taken), but Rose likely spent more consecutive time traveling with the Doctor.

Amy and Rory are odd companions in the sense that the Doctor keeps ditching them for extended periods of time, only to come back into their lives for a new round of adventures. There's a multi-month gap between seasons five and six where they've left the TARDIS (but expect the Doctor to return at some point), and then there's another gap of unspecified time between "A Good Man Goes to War" and "Let's Kill Hitler" where, again, they've left the TARDIS and, again, expect the Doctor to return for them.

It's like that Amy and Rory have traveled with the Doctor for longer than Rose (certainly, there's more time than we saw on screen, if only to account for the time Amy's pregnancy would have occupied), but Rose likely traveled with the Doctor for more consecutive time.
