Series 6 Viewing Figures

Another reason for the move is to put as much space between it and the BBC's apparent stinkbomb Don't Scare the Hare, which had been DW's lead-in the first couple of weeks.

I was curious what type of show that was, so I went onto YouTube and saw a glip.*

Oh. My. God.

Oh, come on. I think the robo-bunny is cute (until he gets scared and goes all evil-eyed).

How about a Dr. Who/DSTH cross-over? The Hare would be the coolest companion since Kameleon! :techman:

Don't Scare the Hare or Hole in the Wall...which is the better lead in for Who ;)

I'm unsure when the second block of eps is starting, but I'm kinda hoping for a bit of Strictly/Who crossover!

hmmm.. living in the USA It makes me wonder what the showing was from over here across the pond, and how well BBCA did..anyone?

ah never mind, saw the post above..

so 1 mil hmm? not bad considering the only place to find BBCA around my neighborhood is through satellite or a pretty expensive additional cable package. As it is I have to go to my parents house to catch it on tele..

I do hope BBCA releases an HD version soon, so the quality of the show on their massive flatscreen is up to par with some of the other DTV channels.

BBC America does have an HD version; the problem is getting cable companies to add it. From what I've seen, BBC America (and HD) is spotty for Cox, Time Warner, and Cablevision. Comcast has BBC America on the mid-level cable tier but doesn't offer the HD version at all.

More good news...

The Impossible Astronaut, being accessed over 1.5 million times in the 12 days following transmission.

The figure is nearly three times higher than any other programme available on the iPlayer over the same period. In the first week after transmission 1.38 million accessed the programme, this compares with the 1.27 million who accessed last year's series opener, The Eleventh Hour, over the same period.

The Eleventh Hour went on to become the most downloaded programme ever, a title it still holds, but a title that may be under threat if The Impossible Astronaut continues to attract such attention on the iPlayer.

Day of the Moon, had been accessed over 1.07 million times in the four days it has been available. It has eclipsed The Royal Wedding Service which has been downloaded 0.62 million times since Friday

Amusing given the Fail is still trotting out the "viewing figures are down" nonsense today, although they do have some nice pics from tomorrows episode!

I'm unsure when the second block of eps is starting ...

Just as an aside, based upon the announcement by 2 Entertain that the "Part 2" DVD/BD release is set for early November, that pretty much establishes a September start for the second half.

Oh, come on. I think the robo-bunny is cute (until he gets scared and goes all evil-eyed).

I must confess I did get a Beep the Meep vibe from the clip... :wtf:

PS. Anyone notice that the old WTF smiley that I just used is now animated? I just noticed that!

Episode 2 FINAL ratings are in...

7.30 million viewers and 36.7% share

Thats down 1.56 million from last week and the share was down by 6.6% from the previous week. The figures do not include those watching on iPlayer, where over 1.2 million have accessed the programme within the first week of transmission.

One year earlier episode 2 of season 5 scored...

8.42 million and 38.9 % share

However since episode's 3 overnight ratings were higher than last week, I expect Doctor Who episode 3 to beat episode 2.

The figures do not include those watching on iPlayer, where over 1.2 million have accessed the programme within the first week of transmission.

The BBC do now release their Live Plus 7 figures, which combine the final BARB figures for both the main showing on BBC One, and the BBC Three repeat showings, with an iPlayer figure that has been adjusted to take into account unique viewers and how much of the episode those unique viewers have watched.

These figures are only released monthly, so we don't have any information on Doctor Who yet, but looking at the trends for other shows for which figures have been released, there is a reasonable expectation that the Live Plus 7 figures will show some episodes of Doctor Who being watched by 10 million or more people.

The final ratings from BARB show Day of the Moon was the 15th most-watched UK program of the week, with a jump of 20 points over the overnights after time-shifting was factored in.

So really nothing to panic about. According to the article DW hasn't been out of the Top 20 since Silence in the Library aired way back when. And since Black Spot scored even higher in the overnights (and scored about equal to Moon in the AI ratings - meaning people liked what they saw, meaning it's unlikely we'll see a "people hated the episode so the next week's ratings dip" effect), DW is in good shape.

Where exactly does the AI come from? Is that an actual vote/poll? Some calculation based on how many stopped watching in the middle of the show?

I'm not sure how it's done, but they've been doing it since the 1960s and for some --especially the BBC which is not advertiser supported -- the AI numbers carry more weight than viewership ratings. And they're made available before the final viewer ratings, too, so however they do it, it's done quickly.

Doctor Who has rarely dropped out of the 80% range (considered excellent) since it came back on the air, and several episodes topped 90% which is almost unheard of for a drama program, apparently. But in the past it's scored as low as the 50s.

I'd love to see this brought over to North America. Might be an eye-opener to see which shows people really are just watching as background noise and which ones they actually care about.

EDIT: Trust Wikipedia to have an article on the subject:

I think its the score from 5,000 people though how they choose them I am not sure but its a fairly good barometer normally on how well an episode was liked. I have to admit I expected a low 80's score for episode 3.

the ratings for series 6 aren't really comparable to other seasons ifthey're using live+7 are they?

The ratings system is the same for 2010 and the 2009 specials but I can't speak of the other seasons.
